I think modern westerners have a poor definition of god.
I think everyone has a god. It's what you sacrifice all your time, money, and effort to. One of the whole points being made in the Old Testament was that you should be careful which god you choose, because there is one god to rule them all - God.
The idea that gods existed was de facto reality in the ancient mind. Today in the West, it is sadly the opposite, so we have vast swathes of people who are convinced that they have no god - while they spend 8 hours a day playing Call of Duty and when they're not playing it they talk to their friends about it, their friends who also play Call of Duty, and when they meet someone who doesn't play Call of Duty then they try to convince them to do it. They literally arrange everything in their lives so that they can spend all their time doing it, but "nah bro, I'm like an atheist, there's no god, bro."
