A few years ago, I got a flu vaccine, and a few days later got really sick. The following year, I got another flu vaccine, and again got really sick a few days later. The past several years, I refused the vaccines and have not gotten sick.

I think you are overstating this a bit. From what I've read they are seeing many instances of normal side effects and some severe side effects, all of which is pretty typical when developing new vaccines or drugs.
The volunteers for these trials are at higher risk because they are running multiple phases concurrently so more people are being exposed to more risks before the prior phase data is fully understood and a decision can be made whether to continue to the next phase, but since they are adult volunteers I don't have a problem with that.
I'm sure many of the vaccine candidates will not pan out do to bad side effects, but hopefully some of them will.
