It started with Obamagate. Both a witchhunt and a coverup for their own crimes. The "Resistance" had begun. Hillary refused to cede on election night. And there would be no peaceful transfer of power.
Trumps administration would be character assassinated, his officials jailed for anything and everything, even fabricated crimes. The MSM would continue the propaganda campaign to polarize the country. Violence against Trump supporters was normalized. Suppressing the rights of Trump supporters became commonplace.
In congress, the Dems ruthlessly opposed any good governing brought by Trump. They could oppose even the best of policies, knowing their voters wouldn't learn the truth.
They abandoned justice and truth altogether with the Kavanaugh hearings. And then, drunk on their own lies, impeached Trump for a crime Sloppy Joe commit.
They weaponized a Chinese made cold to enact a radical agenda. Recovery and health for the nation meant a sure loss for the dirty dems. So they used propaganda to scare the citizens, used authoritarian dictates to squash the economy and the hopes of citizens, and used the fear to usher in the basis for widespread voter fraud.
Next they encouraged riots and civil unrest. The terrorists knew there would be no repercussions in many cities. Their mission? Sow fear and bring the quality of life down, in hopes that people would be so miserable they'd vote for a sock puppet.
In the weeks leading up to the election, violence and protests will escalate. Hitler Youth(the Sunrise Movement, BLM, and Antifa) will intimidate and potentially hurt conservative voters on election day.
Despite a nationalist resurgence, the globalists have done their darndest to make America a 2nd world country. Equalization, progressivism, absolute control. They abandoned the law a long time ago and will stop at nothing.

What happened in 2016 was only the ramping up of what was started before.
It was the 2000 election, when Bush 43 was put in office. Democrats to a man all declared Bush to have been "selected" by the Supreme Courts of Florida and the USA.
Democrats throughout the media ALL declared, "Bush is NOT my president!". All who drank the Kool-aid began repeating this in the months following the election.
It was at this point that Democrats began to declare they would NOT be happy with sharing power - they had to have ALL the levers of power they felt they were entitled to.
They ramped up their efforts in 2006, when they took back both houses of Congress. Dingy Harry Reid began wiping out ALL of the previously agreed rules of the Senate, replacing them with parliamentary procedures which made political opposition to the Democrat agenda difficult, if not impossible, to oppose.
Obama weaponized the government bureaucracies against any group labelled conservative or Christian, if that group challenged Democrat power in any serious way.
We've been in a cold civil war for nearly 20 years now.
Only in the last 3 years has it intensified to the point where normies are beginning to take notice.
Add in that Bush was a controlled sock puppet for the realization of those goals, and the media normalizing censorship following 9/11, and you've got a great summary.
At the time, the choice was between "conservative" Bush '43 and Al Gore.
