My thought on a potential civil war: there is clearly a divide in our country and the rift is so wide I do not believe there is any middle ground left, nor is either party even willing to move toward the other spectrum (I'm not saying that Trump supporters should start leaning more left, I'm just stating the obvious). Although it seems what moderates are left are favoring Trump, there is still a large amount of the population that believes everything this country is built on is wrong and must be destroyed along with its citizens. This extremism has been allowed to fester and grow for too long and infiltrate too many key institutions and industries that the only way I see it ending is through force.
President Trump has done a great job in trying to right the ship, but as has been demonstrated, he cannot do it all and eight years is too short a time frame to fix all that is broken. The other dilemma is the unwillingness - or simply the lack of engagement - of the voting populace to extend the Trump movement into the other aspects of government, both federal and state/local. Voters have been lulled into believing that simply electing ANY Republican will suffice, when clearly, it is just as obstructive as having Democrat in the position. There has been no REAL political referendum on the scale necessary to combat the level of insurrection we face if we intend to eradicate in our lifetimes through nonviolent methods. And it could all be undone in one election cycle.
I believe civil war is inevitable - both parties seem to be clamoring enough for it and the alternative measures diminish as time progresses. The problem with civil war and why it scares the hell out of me and should everyone else that, whether jokingly or with serious intent, is promoting that action is it will not simply be our versus theirs. EVERY single damn country in the developed world will put it's weight into the conflict, and each will aid the side that benefits them the most. And right now, the rest of the world benefits if the US is taken down, because we, as a unified and strongly centralized power, are unmatched. Everyone else wants to be on top and would love to exploit our own calamity to reinforce their own relative stability and grab hold of any of our contentious resources. So, we could very well be fighting a WORLD WAR pitted against large, organized, foreign military factions (looking at you, China) with half of our manpower pitted against us and many unwilling to take up the fight if the odds seem insurmountable. Yes, we would have some allies that may come to our aid - mainly to stick it to a rival on the other side of the table, but I guarantee that we have more enemies than friends that matter.
I don't believe there are many other directions this country could turn to steer us away from this conflict; some things are simply unavoidable. But I will say it would be FOLLY of us to believe the fight coming is going to be easy, short, and at little cost to us. If we're going to prepare for an armed engagement, we need to be thinking MUCH bigger than Antifa, BLM, and some nutjob politicians.
