This reporter is going with that statistic because it makes the numbers appear worse as a segment of the whole population (when comparing countries) as apposed to the number of recorded cases. He probably does that because Trump, rightly, points out that the US does a staggering number of tests compared to other countries, so he needs to find another way to present the numbers.
I don't understand why deaths as proportion of population is a bad statistic. Let's say USA did no testing of the population as a whole, just the sick people who came to the hospital. And some of these died of COVID-19. You can still deduce the lethality of the virus across the country based on these numbers.
We take another scenario, where let's say the USA is offering tests and let's say 30 million people were tested. And some amount of people are dying still. How is the testing of sick and healthy people all that relevant to how well we are doing? The bottom line is how many people are dying of COVID-19 across the nation as a whole.
Testing certainly has benefits, but I don't see the point of using tests in the ratios of death (as a denominator, I guess?).
I'm not a statistician, so I can't say that deaths to population is completely useless, but it does seem that way to me.
My reasoning is, when comparing the number of deaths to the whole population, you have no idea how many people are even infected across the whole population. But comparing them to known cases, you can determine a survival rate. And the bottom line isn't so much the total number of people that are dying, but the death vs survival rates. That's what the lockdowns and mandates were based on; a supposed death rate of 3%.
I think you have a good point there. But if we are only testing some percentage of the population, you potentially have a huge unknown in the percentage not tested. So it is hard to draw good conclusions. Whereas you have a much firmer grasp of total population and covid deaths.

It doesn't really tell you anything about the lethality of the virus. This reporter is going with that statistic because it makes the numbers appear worse as a segment of the whole population (when comparing countries) as apposed to the number of recorded cases. He probably does that because Trump, rightly, points out that the US does a staggering number of tests compared to other countries, so he needs to find another way to present the numbers.
I don't understand why deaths as proportion of population is a bad statistic. Let's say USA did no testing of the population as a whole, just the sick people who came to the hospital. And some of these died of COVID-19. You can still deduce the lethality of the virus across the country based on these numbers.
We take another scenario, where let's say the USA is offering tests and let's say 30 million people were tested. And some amount of people are dying still. How is the testing of sick and healthy people all that relevant to how well we are doing? The bottom line is how many people are dying of COVID-19 across the nation as a whole.
Testing certainly has benefits, but I don't see the point of using tests in the ratios of death (as a denominator, I guess?).
I'm not a statistician, so I can't say that deaths to population is completely useless, but it does seem that way to me.
My reasoning is, when comparing the number of deaths to the whole population, you have no idea how many people are even infected across the whole population. But comparing them to known cases, you can determine a survival rate. And the bottom line isn't so much the total number of people that are dying, but the death vs survival rates. That's what the lockdowns and mandates were based on; a supposed death rate of 3%.
I think you have a good point there. But if we are only testing some percentage of the population, you potentially have a huge unknown in the percentage not tested. So it is hard to draw good conclusions. Whereas you have a much firmer grasp of total population and covid deaths.

To be fair, there are certain types of interviewers that Trump struggles with. I am not sure why the Trump campaign allowed this interview. This is not an interview, this is more of a cross-examination. The problem is there is no opporunity to cross-examine what the interviewer is saying. Anyone can be made to look struggling if cross-examined without prep.
Just to expound, a President, even though he is the highest official in a country, does not always have the details nor is best to go into arguments about details. That's why there are cabinet members. A president covers a broad range of issues (health, economy, military, diplomacy) it is pretty much impossible to be able to well-versed in all of them.
Interviewers are supposed to extract the side or perspective of the interviewee, not antagonize them for every statement, regardless whether the interviewer agrees with the interviewee or not.
