Yup. They just do it for attention. Just like fart-can mufflers on 25-year old Honda Civics.

I own a diesel, btw.

Also: you can totally modify a diesel to put out a LOT of torque and HP and not belch out a single particle of smoke. Smoke means too much fuel and not enough air, which means a sloppy tuner didn't do actual testing and just said: "oh ok, he deleted his dpf, catalytic converter and muffler, so I'll tell the ECU to pump in twice as much fuel and tell the turbo to pump in as much air as possible."

But without a turbo upgrade, the system can't pump in enough air to burn with the flood of diesel now added, and you get unburned fuel: smoke.
