No, they're telling us they can't handle ancient Greek. In this word, Pedo means kid, phile means affinity to something. You may have known the word hydrophilic in some science book or material description on a label, it simply means this thing can be mixed with water or wetted by water. That's the same root word here. Such big word is beyond them. They have to dumb it down.
