Nitrous oxide can explode on its own, and such an accident killed three people during a SpaceShipTwo test on 2007 July 26. It is also so easy to get enough fuel into ammonium nitrate that it can seem to explode on its own under certain circumstances.
I think you're thinking of something like nitrogen tetraoxide. Nitrous oxide is the laughing gas they give you at the dentist. Not explosive. Add fuel to any oxidizer, it becomes explosive.

Nitrous oxide.
Is non-flammable.
Can explode.
Has positive enthalpy of formation.
*GASP* Did you know that water isn't flammable either? It, too, can explode.
