"What you could not do was speak, act or protest against the State. This is horrible."

This is not just "horrible," it is the root of the gross violations of liberty by the Nazi state. The Communist Chinese similarly claim not to interfere in religion, but it is plain from viewing a Chinese aboveground church that it is not the case. The Nazis were not concerned with theology, but they were very concerned with social beliefs. German churches who wanted to stay on good terms with the government had to expel baptized Jews and anything preached that was judged to be detrimental to the state (which depended on what the state thought might be threatening, not whether the pastor actually meant) risked government interference. And calling Hitler a Catholic is the height of ludicrousness. His actions betray that he was no more a Catholic than is Nancy Pelosi, no matter what he may have been baptized as. Furthermore, the ranks of the Nazis were rife with pagans and neo-pagans who preferred a non-Christian concept of God. It is true that the Nazis loved to use Martin Luther's writings, but only insofar as it aided the goals of the Nazi regime and the campaign against Jewish influence.

All of these violations of free religion and free speech are the primary evil of the Nazi government. I don't care if the trains run on time or if I'm starving to death if the state is arresting pastors and priests or forcing Christian Jews to be expelled from the church. You may consider eating horse crap superior to eating cow chips, but both are crap and have no merits that change that or make one objectively preferable to the other as a daily meal.

As for entering World War II, the comparison of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union make little difference. If we wanted to avoid war, then it was Japan we had to negotiate with. For that blame Roosevelt all you like. (Regardless, Japan also had a moral duty not to bomb Pearl Harbor when we hadn't committed any acts of war against them.) The reason we were at war with Germany was not the US's fault at all. In fact, Hitler could have avoided war if he wanted. His treaty with Japan did not include offensive wars, and Hitler was not obligated to join them when they attacked Hawaii. But instead, he chose to declare war on us anyway, taking any decision out of our hands. As abhorrent as FDR was, he was not the one who chose war with Germany. That was Hitler.

Hey I appreciate the long reply.

Re: church. It's not what comes out of the preacher's mouth that matters all that much. It's the mere fact that the gathering was allowed, even encouraged. Right here in the USA, Commies like DeBlasio and others have restricted church services. So on that count, and it's a big one, right now in 2020, American lefties are worse than the Germans. Already. Imagine a lefty president.

Re : "If i'm starving to death". this entire paragraph is crap and not worth a reply because the premise is nonsense. Commies starved, Nazis didn't. Pre war Germany raised the standard of living of millions. The USSR never did that. China has done it through theft and through American leaders selling us out.

It's OK to acknowledge a difference between Nazis and Commies, and it's OK to say the Commies are worse. Because they are

Germany went to war over food and oil. They had no choice, other than to abandon Hitler's ideology. There was mass starvation before they were done.

Operation Barbarrossa ground to a halt due to lack of fuel. Entire fighting units couldn't fight due to lack of food, to the extent digits and limbs fell off from cold. Mass starvation and death is the only consistent product of Marxism, and this is little different. Hitler's spin on it that caused Germany to go to war doesn't change the basics.
