I refuse to update my iPhone because of that shit

16
Ben45 16 points ago +17 / -1

My phone didn't even ask to update. One day it just appeared

zx9john 27 points ago +27 / -0

You gotta turn it off in settings. I don’t think you can roll back... but bahhh, who are we kidding... they’re fucking trackin and spyin and hot mic’n us all the time anyway... don’t need Snowden to tell us that!

https://ipsw.me/ lets you download old versions of iOs. They currently have 12.4.8 that can be reinstalled with iTunes. Meanwhile my phone is asking to upgrade to 13.6, but it can go on asking, I ain't doing it.

One of the "improvements" is "Ability to log new symptoms, like fever, chills, sore throat or coughing, and share them with third-party apps". Gee I wonder what diseasethat's been in the news lately has those symptoms.

Turn off auto update.

N0-F3D 10 points ago +10 / -0

I haven't updated either. First I want to see hard data that proves the API doesn't broadcast or receive any information while toggled off.

Unfortunately, I need bluetooth and really don't trust the Google-Apple alliance.

Gruff_Old_Goat 8 points ago +8 / -0

My iphone asked for about two weeks, I refused of course. Auto updates are off, and it still forced the install.

Time to root my phone.

Doesn't mean you have to make it any easier.

Besides, I wanna edit the HOSTS file on my phone, anyway.

I refer back to the first part of my previous comment.

Feel free to offer another course of action. "Nuh uh!" isn't conducive to productive conversation.

I have to per my job. It is installed and working, but I forget to have my Bluetooth on. Always. Imagine that coupled with my guns falling in the lake. Boy, am I not careful.

16
LowIQCrazyMika 16 points ago +16 / -0

Unless you have a company given phone I don't think your job can force you to install shit on your personal phone. If my job told me to install crap on my personal phone, I would be going ape shit in them and will be asking for a company phone. I would install it on company phone and will keep that in home and not take it anywhere

5
Tusculan2 5 points ago +5 / -0

They gave me the option to create a log book with detailed information of who I am with, when and where. Made me sign that I have to do one or the other. I could make a log book with a bunch of crap in it. But I would rather be forgetful.

2
MAUSGA 2 points ago +2 / -0

This is also the option I was given by my employer. Thankfully they were not at all specific about what they wanted to be logged so I record the bare bones of activity within the workplace only.

2
Scroon 2 points ago +2 / -0

That's terrifying. They were actually asking for a log of all your personal activity and contacts, and they don't see a problem with that?

1
Tusculan2 1 point ago +2 / -1

We need to open, so in order to do that we have to force you to be mindful of others.

Suddenly the Note10+ (and many other phones going forward) not having a headphone jack makes a lot more sense.

AJ says it's already installed on phones without permission. He sells privacy pouches for phones too. Banned dot video and visit the store. Sadly only 1-2% of visitors buy anything.

TECHNICALLY if you root your phone and then give false loc data.. then yes.

We need one of those Asian phone like factories where 1,000's of phones say that they traced to Fauci's house.

Just a non sequitur.

He's got a beach house in Southampton, this google maps link is also non sequitur.

If you have an Android phone that you can root, the paid version of XPrivacyLua will let you feed random sensor data to apps.

It's kind of a royal pain. Google won't let you escape their tentacles easily.

If government apps are being used for public safety they should be open source with free read access to the connected database.

Pretty easy protocol to fulfill AND it allows for other organizations and clever individuals to make use of the data for clever research.

Apple put covid tracking into people's phones, it's off right now, for now.

8
DoctorCox [S] 8 points ago +9 / -1

Google too.. on automatically

6
MaxineWaters4Prez 6 points ago +6 / -0

Even when it's switched off I don't believe it's off.

For Android, go to settings , then Google. Not sure about iPhone. For Google however, you need to install an app that is coming from Official Government Health Department to activate the contact tracing option. Until you install an official app, the setting is OFF What Google and apple did was just develop an API

3
RagnarD 3 points ago +3 / -0

I checked and I don't have Google under settings. Then again, my phone is 10 years old. Hopefully that means I'm safe from this spyware being automatically installed on my phone.

Given that my phone is running on an rSim15+ right now because the previous owner never bothered to get it carrier-unlocked, I have automatic updates turned off. Here's one more reason to leave it off.

You can also download old IPSW firmware files to "downgrade" iDevices to previous versions.

Well I'll be damned. https://web.archive.org/web/20200710181933/https://support.google.com/android/answer/9888358

They installed it on all phones on android via google play.

"Only public health authorities can use this system Only official public health authority apps can use the system. Their apps must meet specific criteria around privacy, security, and data use."

Riiiiiight!!! Use a VPN with GPS spoofing! Surfshark has it.

I guess its time to turn an old phone into a GPS device when traveling now.

Ugh this is getting out of hand quickly this year.

This is what worries me the most. In Queensland and Western Australia (maybe other states as well not sure) they implemented anti-association laws. Qld called theirs VLAD. They hyped it up as law to target organised crime like OMC’s but the text never once mentions any such organisation. Essentially, once they designate you as a member of something they don’t like they can fuck you over (Things like arrest you immediately just for walking into a pub) and anyone you associate with as well (even if they have no idea of your previous charges or crimes). To me, contact tracing is just the digital tool to supplement policing of laws just like these. Imagine having your door kicked in because you sat next to a complete stranger on the bus two days ago who then did some crime later on.

MisterGuapo 8 points ago +8 / -0

On my Android, I turned off the exposure notifications (it's under the Google settings). The blurb below it said it needs to be used with an installed tracking app.

I am HOPING that's accurate because I haven't installed any such tracking apps.

I would like this.

I recently cracked the screen on my 'droid and either want to root the next device I get or switch to iPhone. I have long hated Apple products (am software developer) but they appear considerably less evil than Google.

I need to revisit the process of getting Google (mostly) off my android phone... and actually do it this time.

I'm just glad I have a rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader.

LineageOS and FOSS apps.

I use FDroid and Aurora Droid.

Is there anything better out now? I haven't been in the scene for a couple of years.

Well the covid crap came with google play store update which is forced even with updates off apparently.

So getting away from Google app store and using just FDroid store or something?

3
mechdork 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yeah you can get rid of almost everything Google if your phone is rootable.

You have to learn to live without Google play store and other Google apps but there are alternatives like FDroid.

nah the mask mode Face ID was developed rather quickly because people were complaining too much of being too lazy/"afraid" to pull the mask down to unlock thier phones and they were concerned of backlash if they didn't develop a solution in terms of "safety"

You have to stop and ask yourself: how in the world could this benefit me? What possible positive impact could this have for the end user?

Oh, you stopped at the same red light as someone who is roommates with a guy whose 97 year old grandma died of COVID. The stasi are coming to apply your ankle bracelet and will maintain house arrest for 14 days.

Oh gee golly I sure am glad I installed the contract tracing app!

1
johnrambo 1 point ago +1 / -0

I swear every hour I got a notification to update so I finally gave up and updated. I might have to look into rolling it back, I see that you might be able to do that. I don't want to lose my stuff though so I don't know. They been tracking and listening to us for 10 years now though so I can't roll back to razor.
