It's cold in the winter and hot in the summer, but the weather is lovely most months, with mostly sunny skies. If COVID proved anything, is that living stacked like cord wood on top of others is a liability. I get the feeling that big city leaders think that if they can go back to school, the people will come back to the city, but I just don’t see that happening. That ship has sailed to safer suburban communities where police are allowed to do their jobs.
I would say it's probably a two-pronged problem. First, many are leaving the city, and cities in general. Second, Covid mandates (I'm not 100% sure what they are in NY or NYC) probably keeping people away from doing much in the way of shopping or business.
I lived in Chicago almost 20 years. There is literally NOTHING to do besides spend money when you’re in a dense city. Even when I’d try to develop new hobbies, because of the density and traffic, it’s impossible to keep up with anything not in walking distance. Your “hobbies” eventually become local bars and restaurants. Every “event” revolves around a bar.
NYC is far worse in density and they have tiny apartments bc they’re supposed to use the city around them for all food, entertainment, and socializing. I have no clue what these people do with themselves all day and this is month 6!
I think the whole state is in "Phase 4" now, which is pretty much everything open. Masks still mandated. Over here in the western part of the state it feels pretty normal, certainly nothing like in the video even during the strictest part of the lockdown back in April.
I noticed years ago even back in Bloomberg days that things were going downhill. I used to love to go to Soho. Cute little boutiques and cafes. If COVID proved anything, is that living stacked like cord wood on top of others is a liability. The good people of New York saw a disaster coming and an incompetent leader of the city that was already ruining a once great city. If people are forced to work from home, home can be anywhere. No one knows how much longer this insanity will go on, but I’m not surprised the left is finally accepting that kids should be back in school. I get the feeling that big city leaders think that if they can go back to school, the people will come back to the city, but I just don’t see that happening. That ship has sailed to safer suburban communities where police are allowed to do their jobs.
I would say it's probably a two-pronged problem. First, many are leaving the city, and cities in general. Second, Covid mandates (I'm not 100% sure what they are in NY or NYC) probably keeping people away from doing much in the way of shopping or business.
I lived in Chicago almost 20 years. There is literally NOTHING to do besides spend money when you’re in a dense city. Even when I’d try to develop new hobbies, because of the density and traffic, it’s impossible to keep up with anything not in walking distance. Your “hobbies” eventually become local bars and restaurants. Every “event” revolves around a bar.
NYC is far worse in density and they have tiny apartments bc they’re supposed to use the city around them for all food, entertainment, and socializing. I have no clue what these people do with themselves all day and this is month 6!

I think the whole state is in "Phase 4" now, which is pretty much everything open. Masks still mandated. Over here in the western part of the state it feels pretty normal, certainly nothing like in the video even during the strictest part of the lockdown back in April.

I noticed years ago even back in Bloomberg days that things were going downhill. I used to love to go to Soho. Cute little boutiques and cafes. All of the sudden, the cute places disappeared and it was all Nike and Adidas and huge corporations. Also started feeling unsafe taking the subway at night. Homeless everywhere. During the Giuliani days, you could walk around at midnight and feel perfectly safe. Huge police presence. I quit visiting. I don't miss it. DeBlasio is just finishing off the job Bloomberg started.

In the walkarounds I have watched of Manhattan, it's really terrible. There are some restaurants that have tried to move out onto the sidewalks, but a huge amount are clised and most stores are boarded up. Not much pedestrian traffic, either.
And yet a poster here swears Manhattan and Brooklyn are both a-ok, no damage, no problem, better than FL.
I've seen TONS of video footage, and I know everything boarded up is covering broken glass storefront windows that haven't been replaced, and likely never will be. Look how much of the area destroyed like this in '68 never got rebuilt!
It's an August weekend and Cuomo ignores science and still refuses to open indoor dining, bars, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and broadway. What the fuck is there to do in Manhattan right now? Nothing. Everyone went to the beaches in NJ, The Rockaways, and Long Island or fucked off to the mountains in the Poconos and the Catskills.

Wow. I was always amazed when I went to Manhattan - it was always so busy and so alive, I loved it. I can't believe this video.
I kept that Times Square tab open and look at it at different times of the day. It is always just a few people, which means tourism is wiped out. Plus, they put homeless in a lot of the hotels!
