There were multiple recordings and in one he says "count me out - in" showing he wasn't firm on anti-violence. He ultimately pissed off the radical left with the song though.

In the 60s the Beatles tried to be commies with apple corps, and they got robbed blind. They never tried that again and while they all donated to various causes they all embraced their personal wealth. I don't think you can call Lennon a commie in earnest.
