You're talking about a revision done thirty years ago, not recently. The issue with the Auschwitz-Birkenau numbers was Poland claiming an extra couple million non-jew Poles in addition to the 1.x million jews. There are a number of reasons why Soviet controlled Poland inflated non-jew numbers for forty-five years and then accepted a revised number after the fall of the Soviet Union.
