My Economics fu isn't completely there, yet, but wouldn't a little inflation draw the USD and CAD (and other currencies worldwide) closer, and be helpful for US businesses who want to sell in those countries? For some reason, maybe because I'm tired, I'm not wrapping my head around it completely. It's good to lower taxes, it's good to defund the government. I'm not sure if I'm right about it facilitating trade. What Trump is putting through, though, isn't the same as what the last Stimulus was, or what the HEALS act would have been. It seems better in a lot of respects.

Not really. Bottom line: when I pay less taxes, it is a tax cut. What if the world blew up? The US defaults? My state secedes? The notion that 'the only possible outcome is I pay it back' is just inaccurate. The only actual thing, that actually happened, is I immediately paid less taxes (ie, a tax cut).
I'm much more happy that I'm paying less money now, and the onus is now on government to try to take people's money away again.

Not to be a complete downer, but we're 26.6 trillion in debt already; 136% debt to GDP. We've ran trillion dollar deficits for an entire decade; since 2010. This is clown world. No one even thinks it's possible to run a balanced budget (in Congress, anyways), what the hell are people doing???
-So, me and a good number of other people have effectively came to the realization: this debt is not going to be repaid. It will be defaulted on, either outright or nominally via inflation. People should prepare accordingly.
But, back in regards to my point: effectively, in regards to the above: The US is going to default, period. I don't see how this payroll tax action is going to have any impact, really. The game is simply this, to me: give people their money back. 'Cuz they need it. And good luck trying to collect on the US debt from me ;-), I've got a one letter word: repudiation :).

The order didn't actually cut taxes, it just deferred them until next year and asked the Treasury to attempt to pass the legislation required to excuse ~$500 billion in payroll taxes. That money can really only come from increased taxes later or the Fed printing more money, since pretty much no one in Washington, including Trump, has shown any interest in decreasing spending.

A Democrat would ignore the limits of their powers and enact executive orders which have the power of legislation. After the supreme court refused to strike down Obama's executive order on DACA, Trump seems to have gotten frustrated with them. He seems to be making executive orders which would arguably be beyond the power of the executive branch.
My theory is he is doing it as a chess move. The more he pushes the limits of his power, the more likely it will be challenged at the supreme court. If it reaches supreme court arguments, he can assert his power is as valid as Obama's, forcing them to overturn DACA if they want to overturn Trump's orders.
He's a Conservative-leaning Centrist who ran on the Republican ticket because he already knew the DNC was putting Hilldawg up for president, no matter who was running against her for the primary.

This 8% (15% if self employed) is absolutely massive and probably one of the biggest things Trump has done in his presidency. Fox News (yeah, I know) reported that "Employees would need to repay the federal government once the tax holiday ends without further action." So, it sounds like if you benefit from this, you'll just get screwed next year unless a future order is passed to forgive the payments.
That's an accurate current summary, to my understanding :-). To flesh out the pragmatics, it would really just hurt people's feelings when they see a smaller tax refund.
Fingers crossed - in my linked video above, Trump is on record wanting to forgive those taxes, hopefully a powerful indicator. If nothing else, it will make people wake up that 7.6% is being being straight up jacked out of their paychecks, maybe time to reconsider that one :)

Although I agree with this plan to help the struggling workers, there is a catch and that is that the 7% still has to be paid later, next year on the 2020 tax filing. It is only deferred and not removed. So this will hit many people unawares later when they have to come up with the money. But at least this gives them a little extra boost this year, and help them keep a roof over their heads.
