Safety warning for dealing with the above situation:
A lot of newer cars have proximity sensors on the front and back that detect obstacles in the vehicle's path. Frequently, these sensors are connected to the car's computer, and many modern cars will STOP AUTOMATICALLY if the computer thinks a collision is imminent.
A lot of rioters are aware of these systems. When you see rioters standing in front of a vehicle, plopping a sheet of plywood on a car's hood, or dropping their motorbike in front of it? Many of the rioters are probably trying to set off those sensors so the car can't move.
Check in advance to see if your vehicle has one of these systems (you can test how your car's sensor system works by driving towards a 12-pack of paper towel rolls from the grocery store). If your car has this system, be sure you know how to turn it off in an emergency.
I work on those systems. If you have Adaptive Cruise Control. You have Automatic Emergency Braking. Theres a little radar in the front of your grill thats doing the detection.
This should not trigger a standard AEB system as the starting distance (>15ft) is too short and usually require a minimum speed (>5mph) to engage and also have a maximum speed.
Now if you have a camera also in your windshield that doing some minor classification work. You probably have Pedestrian Emergency Braking. Again the pistol holders are too close for the system to engage, but it may engage on the people farther back.
You can turn them off in the settings. Rioters have no idea about those systems...they cant afford a car made after 1999.
How to turn these systems off.
GM - Settings > Vehicle > Collision/Detection Systems > Forward Collision System > Off
Ford - From the Settings menu, select Driver Assist > Pre-Collision> Toggle Active Braking on or off.
Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler - You can turn on and turn off ParkSense with the ParkSense switch located below the Uconnect display

Just another great reason to buy and fix Old American Vehicles.
SJW's may be soft and squishy, but hitting one can still dent that front bumper.
I would be very reluctant to damage a classic American car that way.
