There’s 300 teachers in a county here that have successfully gotten exemptions to not return to work because of Covid, INCLUDING NOT HAVING TO INSTRUCT ONLINE WEB CLASSES. So, they are getting paid and funding their pensions for doing nothing. There is literally zero accountability or rules left. I’m extremely pissed off that we have to continue paying our property taxes while these teachers sit on their ass at home.

I liked how they were protesting that it's too dangerous for them to go back to work. Because a crowded school could become a coronavirus hot spot. But as we all know protesting in a crowd you can't get it lol
Why tf are they exempt from going back to work but no one else is?!
I say fire them all.
If your schools aren't opening and/or not properly staffed, communities are going to have to sue their counties and cities for failing to provide the services.
Dude we’re in a situation where not only are schools not opening, teachers are someone using Covid as an excuse to not have to be present and interact for online classes!
At some point the community should sue the city for the funding to go to the parents can pay for private teachers, daycare providers, athletic trainers, art teachers, music lessons, home school resources, computer equipment and whatever else parents are relying on schools to provide. The cities and state are basically saying "F-you" to the taxpayers and are not providing the services they are obligated to provide. If nothing else, the cities and counties should at least suspend the taxes. Or if enough homeowners get organized to pull their taxes out of escrow.
I agree 💯%. I would just say the easiest way to do this is eliminate 80% of property taxes.
redo the air traffic controller's strike solution
This might be the greatest long term affect of Covid. It has forced us to reconcile the failed Public primary education.
Yeah if we actually do something about it. If property taxes stay the same and we don’t even have schools despite how shitty they were than wtf.

Maybe I'm wrong, but teachers are not allowed to file for unemployment benefits. The reason for this is that they could reasonably argue that every summer and Christmas vacation theyre not employed or under employed. The teachers unions had to concede a few things to get this to go over, but it's been that way for quite some time. Maybe that's just the way it is where I live. But can confirm that my mother, sister and brother in law haven't received a paycheck or uneployment since school was cancelled.
What state are you in? I highly doubt there is a place where teachers just stopped getting paid during this.
Eugene, OR area. Bluest of blues here. Just talked to my sister this morning about this topic. Can re-affirm they haven't received any money since they stopped working from home (1st week of May).
Do they normally not receive income in the summer when they’re not working? I don’t know how that works.
It depends on the individual. You can elect to get paid over 9 months or 12. Most people choose equal payments over 12 months. However, their contracts are still based on the 9 months they are actively working. That's where the issue of unemployment comes up. Generally state employees don't have to worry about under employment. Academics are the exception in that case. Honestly not trying to piss in anyone's Cheerios, but at least for me and my family in my area, your statement for discussion does not apply.
Ok, so you’re saying that they aren’t getting paid per the 9 month rule. That makes sense. What I’m discussing is when they go back to school this fall, they aren’t going back, aren’t teaching online, and are still collecting a full paycheck.
Totally, hate to admit this but my sis is staunchly opposed to going back to work. She's also very "high risk" as they say. Brother in law is a little more realistic about it. He's thinking about the future and realizing they might become non essential. Also I would like to add; you're a super nice guy. Anywhere else on the internet this would have devolved into an argument and likely gotten shitty. Thank you for being a gent.
Right on; thanks. I try not to be an asshole because it doesn’t accomplish anything. In the right circumstances I like to bust balls, but I try to do it in a way that the person knows I’m joking and they’re into it as well. Cheers!
