For me, if money is no object, an SBR PS90 is hands-down the ultimate home defense weapon. Barring that, you want a 'pistol' with a brace (or an SBR) in a rifle caliber.
A short, light weapon is harder for someone to grab and easier to maneuver. You can hold it in one hand and push someone away from you, or you can hold a door shut (or open them).
But admittedly, you can't beat the dirt-cheap aspect of a shotgun. You can literally get one for like $200 and a box of shotshells is the one type of ammo that is completely immune to panic-pricing.
What about Rifled slugs? You get .45 or .30-6 power depending on what your gun can handle. Accuracy is shit - but close up that's a lot of power.
