So scared to have people observe their attempts to program kids...

If what you're doing is fine, then you shouldn't have a problem with parents observing. It's not their job to "parent" the kids or talk with them about social and political issues beyond the scope of the class. If talking about history, then social issues of the period being studied are relevant. If talking about biology, contemporary social issues aren't.
