So if Jesus told us to get a sword, but also did not want his servants fighting the Romans ("My kingdom is not of this world, if it were, then would my servants fight"), then for what purpose were his followers told to retain an implement whose only purpose is to fight men?
My conclusion is that there are other reasons a man might need to have that power besides fighting against religious oppression. Such as thieves, murderers, rapists, etc. The NT clearly supports self defense in these instances, see the parable of the Strong Man. And you might even argue that it would be acceptable to defend even against religious oppression, if the goal is only defense and not the overthrow of government.
