"Note: Provisional death counts are based on death certificate data received and coded by the National Center for Health Statistics as of August 5, 2020. Death counts are delayed and may differ from other published sources (see Technical Notes). Counts will be updated every Wednesday by 5pm. "

There is a 1-2 week delay in getting data, and another avg of 7 days for them coding any COVID related deaths.

Also, some States do not provide death certs more than once or twice a month, and some are notably further behind than norm of 1-2 weeks in reporting due to covid shutdowns.

This means AT MINIMUM you have to deduct 14 days from the reporting date, and more accurately 21 days, to note the last close to correct total:

Since this report is Aug 5th, the chart ends Aug 1st, you should look at the July 22nd and preferably July 15th datapoint.

Iow, don't jump the gun or you discredit real efforts to call things back to low normal.

IIRC, a few weeks ago the CDC was indicating that the virus was heading below pandemic status.

Think about that: trending downward while the economy is opening back up. Sounds like lockdowns just don’t work. Go figure.
