As a community college prof, I only partially agree with you. Yes, not everyone is like this, but they are a growing issue. Example from my school:
Back in May, faculty were having a discussion about what we wanted to do in the fall in terms of online/in person/etc. One english professor literally says that she feels we should shut the whole school down for a year (due to the WuFlu), and the college should pseudo-fire teachers so they can collect unemployment but also be able to easily rehire all the faculty after the WuFlu has passed. Less than a month later, this same professor is marching at the head of a local BLM protest. How someone can mentally reconcile "this is so dangerous we need to close everything for a year" with "I must march in this protest" I've no idea, but that's what it was.
You've already answered your own question:
"To collect unemployment ... without risk of actually losing their job"
I.e. Profit; via cheating the system.
There doesn't need to be rhyme nor reason to a leftists mantra when occupying two seemingly conflicting positions when you would consider that they will follow anything that allows them to profit without actually doing anything.
It is, by nature, a parasitic ideology which requires a host.
Therefore it requires someone else to be earning money such that they are not required to work themselves.
(I'm not against Trump and his 8%, but I did consider that this sort of attitude would arise among leftists that 'stand to profit' by playing the system).
These types of people are parasites; and this is coming from an Ex-Teacher (now in the Private Sector).
Adjunct at a 4-year here.. many colleagues who are also gigantic hypocrites. It's a big scam. Several of my colleagues just disappeared last spring when we went online. Many of my students thanked me and told me I was their only teacher who was still giving a damn... And I'm an adjunct making 1/3 of the others' salaries. It's all fucked

Democrats are the cognitive dissonance party for the noncognitive dissident.
