As soon as we turned 6-7 we were never home. 4 kids in my family. The big one watches the small ones. And we played all over our town, the town was our make belief world full of adventures. We came home briefly for a snack, supper and rest and that was about it. WE had 3-4 forts built by us and previous generations we used to sleep in. When I got older I hunted and fished near my town so I wouldn't have to come home as often.. AS long as you called your parents to give them the 411 each day it was freedom.
But miss that phone call once and you got a paddlin.
I still pick up hikers. But not because I'm nice :) I live about 40mins away from a major city so on my way home I pick them up and drop them off near my town. I feel like it fully commits them to their journey at this point. And if they don't get their next ride well at least they get to spend some coin in my town :)
My grandfather and his friends would bring their rifles and shotguns to school and keep them in their locker, and then go hitchhiking after school to shoot.
Brings to mind my favorite political quote:
"I would rather suffer the inconveniences attending too much liberty, than those attending too small a degree of it"

Yup, all of this.
Back when hitch hiking was a normal way for kids to get around.

My uncle got stabbed in his stomach by a hitch hiker he picked up.
While I don't want to put people off picking up folks in need of a ride, you should still keep your wits about you and not trust them fully.
