Many people need to have what I call, "hand touching the hot stove" moments to learn anything. You can tell someone something, you can show them facts and evidence, and you can even get other people who experienced the thing you're saying to back you up. It doesn't matter. Until that person is directly affected by the thing you are talking about they will never learn.

It will take communism taking over the United States and that person being sent to a gulag to die before they are able to understand, "huh, it looks like communism really IS bad and the communists lied to me."
