Yeah, you're completely uninformed if that's your conclusion. Go ahead and take a look at China's amphibious forces. The PLAN Marine Corps consists of 12,000 troops. Absolutely nothing when trying to mount such an invasion. Their airborne troops are 30,000. Still, very small. Their sealift capability and amphibious assault capability are also not nearly enough to get the job done. All of that is on top of the fact that not only has the PLAN and PLANMC never fought a battle or engaged in an amphibious operation, but the entire PLA hasn't fought a battle since 1979, when they got stomped by the Vietnamese. Taiwan's military is not great, but they have an absurdly good advantage in defending their island. For starters, the weather conditions in the strait are shit, making large fleet coordination and landing troops very difficult even with no fighting going on. Second, there is no beach that the PLA can land that is not defended, lined with sea-breakers (which make great tank traps), and covered by artillery. More importantly, they have basically two types of terrain they can land in: mud flats/rice paddies, or cities. Same goes for their airborne troops, though they could try to land in the mountains if they're REALLY suicidal. Then there's pesky things like Taiwan's plethora of shoulder launched anti-tank and anti-air missiles, which would make short work of any amphibious tanks or helicopters, as well as low-flying airborne transports. Even Taiwan's M-60 tanks would be highly effective in a beach defense as it would be impossible to land MBT's in the first wave, so whatever vehicles do arrive will be overpowered even by older tanks. Taiwan also has plenty of shore-launched anti-ship missiles, so it would be difficult or impossible for larger amphibious landing ships to even get close. All China could do is rain down missiles on the defenders, but that wouldn't be all that effective without a sea/ground-based follow up.
Meanwhile, the US would be raining its own missiles down on China, especially against its ships. China's navy would have to deal with American subs, American aircraft carriers, and American missile destroyers, leaving the straits FAR too hot to attempt an already suicidal amphibious landing. We would also be taking over their little island bases in the South China sea (likely with plenty of local help), because we actually HAVE a Marine Corps that can fight. Our stealth bombers would be dropping bombs on their strategic inland sites and all China could do about this is shoot missiles at Guam or Okinawa. America could keep this fight up easily as our logistical capabilities are so far beyond any other nation's that it's not even funny. We could easily choke off trade to China with a blockade, and just by doing that it would end their economy instantly. They'd collapse within days or weeks.
I LOVE this tidbit of military history. Its so small and forgettable that unless you are specifically looking for it, it rarely comes up.
Interesting fact 1: China, a communist country, invades Vietnam, another communist country. Both countries had been public in their "Oriental brotherhood" and and Marxist camaraderie up until the actual invasion. This is NOT usual for commies to attack other commies.
Interesting fact 2: Give or take half a million chinese are involved in the invading forces. Give or take 60k casualties. An estimated little more than 10% of the invading force become killed or wounded in less than a month. That is ridiculously high rates of casualties. For comparison, America has only had 2 wars where we had something comparable. The Civil War and WWII. This rate is like WWI as well, but for the European nations. USA was involved later and had such high numbers going into it that the % doesn't match up well. Overall...over 10% is just BAD. 10% in a month is CRAZY.
Interesting fact 3: China retreats and still calls this conflict a "strategic victory". LOL.
That's literally all you've got? Wow. Pathetic. Do you honestly believe that the US would ONLY launch missiles at China, and that would be that? China wouldn't retaliate against us or escalate? We would just slap them on the face and then sit there and wait to see what response they cook up? Fucking retarded. That's not only not how the US military operates, but not how Trump operates.
You can give financial and military aid but not directly intervene.
Oh that would be super helpful in an all-out war. That definitely wouldn't make the US look like it's afraid of China and unwilling to help its allies or stand up to totalitarian nightmare regimes. You fucking pacifists are the absolutely dumbest. You think the US is in a bubble and anything happening outside its borders is none of our business. You're exactly the reason the world has gotten so fucked up.
My fucking wet dream.
