California has a shit load of conservatives. However I live in a transplant state and we get Cali, Washington, Mass, CT, NY and MI. The Cali, CT, MI folks go back to blue every time. They get sucked into fake news and social media.
It has nothing to do with Mexicans. Many of the Californians of Mexican heritage are Trump supporters.
It's the mostly-white pseudo-intellectuals who are convinced they are fighting for the little guy by supporting nothing but Democrats. They read the news on the internet, they turn on the TV news, and everyone everywhere tells them that Democrats are good and Republicans are evil, especially when it comes to immigration policy.
Most of them truly believe they are saving the world and they get full-blown Manson Family psycho-eyes if you even so much as question if the Democratic party has really been good for the people they claim to be helping.
The few who are somewhat on the conservative side consider immigration policy reform to be a political lightning rod not to be touched. Why? They'll tell you the story of how Pete Wilson ran against immigration and even though he won big, it gave the Democrats fodder to replay those "racist" Wilson campaign ads forever. They'll tell you how the demographics have changed (not untrue, but missing the point) and that's why Gray Davis won and why no Republican can ever win again, even though John Cox got damn close and almost beat out golden boy Gavin. They actually believe Republicans have "lost forever" in the state and there's nothing they can do about it.
As an immigrant to California from other parts of the U.S., this to me is a very California mindset. The people here seem to be programmed to give up easily at even the slightest whiff of a fight. It's nuts. Good for me because I get paid really well just for having a really pretty normal set of balls.
It doesn't occur to the CA GOP that they could fight the Democrat portrayals. It doesn't occur to them that all that is needed is to change the conversation to one of pro-immigrant but anti-illegal-immigrant. They just can't see the two coexisting in their feeble brains. Trump is doing exactly this and they still can't see it.
The few who can are still afraid of fighting because they can't rely on anyone else because so few other people will admit to understanding it. That's why so many California Republicans were never-Trumpers in the 2016 election. They thought it was political suicide to hitch the CA GOP to Trump. They actually think if they are just slightly more right-leaning than Democrats this is the path to success in California. I think a lot of them straight up ticked the box for Hillary because they're really that brainwashed. They just want to go along and get along.
The results of this approach speak for themselves. The GOP is increasingly marginalized, but no worries they can just scapegoat all their problems on Pete Wilson's campaign from 30 years ago instead of admitting that it's their fault for letting the Democrats drive the conversation and has been the entire time.
The CA GOP now, here in 2020, just might finally be waking up to the fact that they've been dead wrong for 30 years and Trump had the proper approach the entire time. Now the real problem is getting the pond scum out of the GOP because they'd rather self-immolate the party than admit they fucked up royally by giving in to the Democrat talking points on immigration for 30 years now.
Honestly, I think a lot of them aren't even interested in ever having to govern, they just want to be the opposition party to the Democrats and once in a while try to get some political scraps.
That's the real problem with the GOP, and not just in California. Trump has showed them up big time. They don't like it so they'd rather sabotage Trump than help him win.
This is the case in many fine red-state areas. The liberals move like locusts - they swarm into new areas, despoil them, and repeat the process in greener pastures. I think someone should need to live in a state for 3 to 5 years prior to being able to vote there for this reason, outside of military personnel. You should have some time to understand and adopt some of the communities' values before trying to disrupt their way of life.
I'm of two minds about it. I won't deny that there are a lot of Republicans in California. But it's also undeniable that it doesn't matter. They lost their state a long time ago, and now they're just Northern Mexico.
Californians are a plague.
