Same atvthe upscale Safeway and Luckys in my N CA city, teams of big male staff a good 10 feet outside doors and one near door too- just like bouncers.
But weirdly the Raleys in a mixed affluent and blue collar zone and the not upscale areas Safeway and TJd and smaller groceries and big box stores pretend they aren't even standing there inside door or have no monitoring. Sometimes I note a quiet approach inside stores or a cheerful reminder with no overt challenge, but that's it.
It helps this is a Greater SFBA edge city vs the heart of darkness, and many come in from the surrounding way less blue areas to shop. And survival relies on those dollars.
Tbh I fall into one or more risk factor ranges and reluctantly wear mine in stores- but I have stopped and stared a hole in Karens who are working up to verbal challenges to unmasked or poorly masked others shopping with nasty looks and asides muttered... until they FEEL my eyes and look at me.
I channel my grandmother's look of cold disapproving force of will straight into their eyes as I think my opinion of their offensive lack of public civility and personal privacy very firmly. Without fail so far they have abruptly dropped their eyes and fled the aisle. And I cheerfully go on shopping.
My Little Grammy was a 4'10" Miss Manners terror without ever saying or doing anything overt or ever raising her voice or hand- and that's one genetic inheritance I am glad I can turn to when need be, lmao!
She would be livid at all this if she were still alive- it breaks every social rule we were raised to practice and wildly violates her standards of personal responsibility too.
