Do you mean sentencing hearing? Depends on the jurisdiction. Some require the jury to impose. Others allow the judge to decide. It's certainly possible for a person who committed lets say multiple murders to be charged and sentenced for each one specifically.

I was watching forensic crime shows from the 90s recently and one guy got 19 death sentences for some pretty horrific murders. Another one got over 1000 years in prison. I think it's just extra insurance that they will never be free again.
