Side note: if you want a legit organization of truly decent, hard working people who funnel most of the money donated to them to the people who need it, the Ronald MacDonald House is the one. They are an amazing organization. I'm not a religious person, but god bless them all.

I know a young married couple who they helped in ways nobody could during a very dark time with a newborn born with a defect. No strings attached, no politics, no bullshit.

That's why they get an anonymous check from me, every year. I pick my charities carefully. I'm not thrilled with St. Jude's politics, but they do great work, too - and local ASPCA and animal shelters always need money or just volunteers.

DO NOT donate to the Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, and the other big ones like the Salvation Army. You're just paying for millions in executive pay packages and bonuses.

Glad you posted this, it's spot on. When I was down on my luck, I can personally vouch Salvation Army and the Red Cross are complete jokes when it comes to charities.

St Vincent de Paul on the other hand went above and beyond to help me get back on my feet and I couldn't be more appreciative of them. Great people, great organization.

Yes, on St. Vincent. I swing by the one near me all the time, every dollar spent there goes to a good cause.
