Spoiler Alert: They never did.

They only cared that you thought it was important because if you play their game, by their rules, then they win.

If you subjected yourself to live according to what they deem 'acceptable' then they control how you live. And therein lies their power, and therein lies the reason why Trump is Teflon Don. Cause the GEOTUS doesn't subscribe to their rules. He doesn't play their game. And he doesn't expect that they will respect their own rules.

This is the only way to win.
