The casting and character choices we see in film is representative of their world, not our society at large. Narrative aesthetic degradation in film has been underway for a decade and shows no signs of halting. They're more concerned with having fun and talking about themselves than creating something great.
I've never really cared much about this issue, probably because the only TV shows and movies I ever watch are usually from the 80s and 90s and nothing new, lol, but I'll say that I can understand the desire to see oneself represented in media. I'm not clamoring for representation at all, but if I see a gay character in some thing and it isn't a stereotypical representation, I find it refreshing.
I think we all have some desire to see ourselves in things, perhaps in part to understand ourselves better. But I really do not like simply dropping in gay (or any group) characters just to do it. And I hate this whole trend of taking X thing and making it Y. Like taking the Ghostbusters and making them chicks, for example. I think that goes to your point of degradation of narratives within this medium. It isn't about discovering something about your identity. It's about having the identity present.

And yes, the aesthetic degradation is due to the desire to make statements about identity or politics or whatever else rather than crafting a story and utilizing those elements, if they're going to make the narrative better, to tell a story. My favorite show of the last 20 years is Black Sails from Starz. It is such a great example of narrative writing and character development. There is a key gay character and the gayness isn't just an identity, it's critical in multiple layers to the narrative. And you buy it, because it's intertwined well. The character and their impact on the narrative would totally change if they were straight. The show is great for many other reasons, I highly recommend if you like period piece stuff. Its exceedingly rare to find a narrative of such depth anymore. The filmmakers themselves were aware; there's an interview with them and the main cast members prior to the final season and they basically said the greatness of the show happened kind of like magic and they all doubt that they'll be a part of something that special again. Many poeple here would like that show because there is immense subtext about old world vs. new world, freedom vs. slavery (of the body and the mind, enslaved to the past/old culture), and the painful battle to birth something new.

My only advice when you watch it: don't give up on it until you get to the middle of the second season. The first season is great in hindsight, but on first watch makes the show seem a tad silly and like any other cable movie channel series that hits the gas on hedonistic scenes. Halfway through the second season, suddenly you're wondering how that fun entertaining show you were watching just opened up into something really great. Third and fourth seasons are even better, the final being one of the best seasons of tv/finale seasons I've ever seen. Every episode was like a season finale. The ending is unique and optimistic, unlike most modern shows. I can't say it's for everyone, but imo is one of the best top-to-bottom narratives I've ever seen in the tv series format.
I have a trans (FtM) family member who is 18, she got sucked into it in high school. I always thought she might be a lesbian and that would've changed nothing in our family. Not how we treat her, or love and support her (and future partners) in any way. Unfortunately she went in the trans direction and the way she describes it is that the concept of just being a lesbian is considered offensive to her trans group. Just 10 years ago she would have been considered a masculine(ish) lesbian and that would've been fine, but the way they talk about "butch lesbians" is appalling.
I hope more gay people are like you, and openly critical of this trans movement. The fact that girls and women are being stripped of sport scholarships and opportunities should be scrutinized and rejected. Female scores are being shattered by trans women (born men) because women simply cannot compete with men physically.
I'm a woman and I find nothing wrong with saying that we don't have the same physical attributes, and the separation in sports was necessary for this very reason. It is all infuriating.
I am sorry to hear about your family member. I truly hope she finds peace however it might be... because I know that so many people transition and they're still miserable. Your story, when you said your family member would have been considered as masculine-ish, reminds me of a moment of time many years back. One of my coworkers who I was a bit close with, and who knew I was gay, was chatting with me. I knew she was a leftist already, so she was telling me how her daughter, who was probably 10 or so, wanted a really masculine haircut. I mean nothing really surprising there in terms of conversation... but then she said to me, "Maybe she might be trans?" And she said it with such a delighted smile. No, not just delighted, but like "awesome, man" smile. Like, she felt so good about it. I was speechless. And literally so. I said nothing. And then the conversation went somewhere else. I wish I had said something. But it was so difficult working in a school when you don't believe this stuff, and I always tried to keep a low profile in that regard.
And yes, I agree with separation in sports. That is just another example of clown world.

Thanks for your kindness, it's so hard to fight against what you know to be a damaging cultural movement while still loving and protecting the person affected by it. She was celebrated at school (the class president publicly praised her and her bravery), teachers changed her name in class without letting her parents know, and all therapists have affirmed. Not one will go against the grain. This person also has anxiety and depression so I worry about the future IF she changes her mind. We just tell her we're there for her and love her no matter what...but some damaging physical changes might be permanent. It kills me.

I believe kindness and compassion is imperative, along with bravery, to defeat these damaging ideologies. Transgenderism, anti-racism, intersectionalism, and the like are all meant to be alluring to lost and concerned souls so that people become entangled in it and give themselves up as tools for the larger movement of Marxism, postmodernism, and critical theory. Those ideologies' main goal is to break society down and turn everyone against each other. To halt logic, reason, dialog and replace them with fear, chaos, and hatred so that the ideologies can flourish. After all, those ideologies are against human nature, and would never survive normally under proper scrutiny.
As much as, for example, people who buy into BLM, Antifa, and the like drive me crazy and make me want to hate them, I have to remember that they are Americans. And their minds and souls are in great danger. Me hating them would be feeding right into the ideologies' hands. I can't perpetuate the hate and contribute to the divide. They want us to be as divided as possible. To be weak and fractured.
We have to try our best to not hate the person, but rather hate the ideology, whatever it might be, and focus efforts on defeating that... to wake people up from it.

The Dear Colleague Letter threatened schools that did not treat transgender individuals as the opposite sex, with lawsuits and the withdrawal of federal funds. This was a complete and total end run around the American people specifically so our voices could not be heard. I'd like to say that most public schools and higher education were against the new interpretation of sex as gender identity, but they just threw science and biology and basic common sense right out the window. Then curb stomped basic logic to death, raped human decency and double tapped the obvious up close and personal. All because middle aged men want to get their weewees hard by masquerading as women and mentally abusive mommies wanted to get back at men by transitioning their sons (Manchausen Syndrome by Proxy) and use puberty blockers to masquerade the gay away. However, female to male adolescent austistic transmen might get the last word because they're already outnumbering male to female autogynephilia transgenders.

The casting and character choices we see in film is representative of their world, not our society at large. Narrative aesthetic degradation in film has been underway for a decade and shows no signs of halting. They're more concerned with having fun and talking about themselves than creating something great.
I've never really cared much about this issue, probably because the only TV shows and movies I ever watch are usually from the 80s and 90s and nothing new, lol, but I'll say that I can understand the desire to see oneself represented in media. I'm not clamoring for representation at all, but if I see a gay character in some thing and it isn't a stereotypical representation, I find it refreshing.
I think we all have some desire to see ourselves in things, perhaps in part to understand ourselves better. But I really do not like simply dropping in gay (or any group) characters just to do it. And I hate this whole trend of taking X thing and making it Y. Like taking the Ghostbusters and making them chicks, for example. I think that goes to your point of degradation of narratives within this medium. It isn't about discovering something about your identity. It's about having the identity present.
It is just another tool for disunity, frankly. You always gotta be on the lookout for how Marxists sow disunity. They want us hating each other. So, to run with my example, then Ghostbusters comes out and it bombs and then some women are like "omg so sexist!!" which make men think "crazy chicks!!" As Americans, we can disagree, but we should be united. The related ideologies to Marxism want us at each others throats, and they exploit moments like these. And yes, the aesthetic degradation is due to the desire to make statements about identity or politics or whatever else rather than crafting a story and utilizing those elements, if they're going to make the narrative better, to tell a story. My favorite show of the last 20 years is Black Sails from Starz. It is such a great example of narrative writing and character development. There is a key gay character and the gayness isn't just an identity, it's critical in multiple layers to the narrative. And you buy it, because it's intertwined well. The character and their impact on the narrative would totally change if they were straight. The show is great for many other reasons, I highly recommend if you like period piece stuff. Its exceedingly rare to find a narrative of such depth anymore. The filmmakers themselves were aware; there's an interview with them and the main cast members prior to the final season and they basically said the greatness of the show happened kind of like magic and they all doubt that they'll be a part of something that special again. Many poeple here would like that show because there is immense subtext about old world vs. new world, freedom vs. slavery (of the body and the mind, enslaved to the past/old culture), and the painful battle to birth something new.

My only advice when you watch it: don't give up on it until you get to the middle of the second season. The first season is great in hindsight, but on first watch makes the show seem a tad silly and like any other cable movie channel series that hits the gas on hedonistic scenes. Halfway through the second season, suddenly you're wondering how that fun entertaining show you were watching just opened up into something really great. Third and fourth seasons are even better, the final being one of the best seasons of tv/finale seasons I've ever seen. Every episode was like a season finale. The ending is unique and optimistic, unlike most modern shows. I can't say it's for everyone, but imo is one of the best top-to-bottom narratives I've ever seen in the tv series format.

I have a trans (FtM) family member who is 18, she got sucked into it in high school. I always thought she might be a lesbian and that would've changed nothing in our family. Not how we treat her, or love and support her (and future partners) in any way. Unfortunately she went in the trans direction and the way she describes it is that the concept of just being a lesbian is considered offensive to her trans group. Just 10 years ago she would have been considered a masculine(ish) lesbian and that would've been fine, but the way they talk about "butch lesbians" is appalling.
I hope more gay people are like you, and openly critical of this trans movement. The fact that girls and women are being stripped of sport scholarships and opportunities should be scrutinized and rejected. Female scores are being shattered by trans women (born men) because women simply cannot compete with men physically.
I'm a woman and I find nothing wrong with saying that we don't have the same physical attributes, and the separation in sports was necessary for this very reason. It is all infuriating.
I am sorry to hear about your family member. I truly hope she finds peace however it might be... because I know that so many people transition and they're still miserable. And the suicide rate is so high. It is simply sad and concerning, to say the least. I hope she is happy with her decision to transition.

Your story, when you said your family member would have been considered as masculine-ish, reminds me of a moment of time many years back. One of my coworkers who I was a bit close with, and who knew I was gay, was chatting with me. I knew she was a leftist already, so she was telling me how her daughter, who was probably 10 or so, wanted a really masculine haircut. I mean nothing really surprising there in terms of conversation... but then she said to me, "Maybe she might be trans?" And she said it with such a delighted smile. No, not just delighted, but like "awesome, man" smile. Like, she felt so good about it. I was speechless. And literally so. I said nothing. And then the conversation went somewhere else. I wish I had said something. But it was so difficult working in a school when you don't believe this stuff, and I always tried to keep a low profile in that regard.
And yes, I agree with separation in sports. That is just another example of clown world.

Thanks for your kindness, it's so hard to fight against what you know to be a damaging cultural movement while still loving and protecting the person affected by it. She was celebrated at school (the class president publicly praised her and her bravery), teachers changed her name in class without letting her parents know, and all therapists have affirmed. Not one will go against the grain. This person also has anxiety and depression so I worry about the future IF she changes her mind. We just tell her we're there for her and love her no matter what...but some damaging physical changes might be permanent. It kills me.
Your edit made me think of Dave Rubin's Don't Burn This Book. It has been illuminating to read about his lessons in coming out as a gay man and how that equates to coming out as a conservative!
I believe kindness and compassion is imperative, along with bravery, to defeat these damaging ideologies. Transgenderism, anti-racism, intersectionalism, and the like are all meant to be alluring to lost and concerned souls so that people become entangled in it and give themselves up as tools for the larger movement of Marxism, postmodernism, and critical theory. Those ideologies' main goal is to break society down and turn everyone against each other. To halt logic, reason, dialog and replace them with fear, chaos, and hatred so that the ideologies can flourish. After all, those ideologies are against human nature, and would never survive normally under proper scrutiny.
As much as, for example, people who buy into BLM, Antifa, and the like drive me crazy and make me want to hate them, I have to remember that they are Americans. And their minds and souls are in great danger. Me hating them would be feeding right into the ideologies' hands. I can't perpetuate the hate and contribute to the divide. They want us to be as divided as possible. To be weak and fractured.
We have to try our best to not hate the person, but rather hate the ideology, whatever it might be, and focus efforts on defeating that... to wake people up from it.

We have a beautiful world (and a beautiful country, USA BABY), and we need to take care of it and all of God's creatures. But I am always first-and-foremost a logic driven person... and I want to take care of the environment in a sensible way that does not unnecessarily disrupt other aspects of worldly existence. And, frankly, I want it done according to my values regarding the free market, which has made so much of our world phenomenal. Free market solutions will pay dividends on environmental issues.
