Two things I’ll never understand. Catholic and Jewish Democrat’s.

My personal experience with both is that they’re atheists who just wear some minimal trappings of their faith.

I don't get it either, and I'm Jewish myself. Jews supported FDR, and look what he did for us. (blocked Jewish refugees from the Nazis from entering the USA, refused to let the Army Air Corps bomb the tracks leading to Auschwitz, etc.) My parents have been registered Democrat since they were old enough to vote, and they're in their 70s now. I was a registered D until 2012 myself. (Changed after that election, when my choice was Zero or a write-in, and I said the hell with this.)

Of course they've been voting R in the general elections since Reagan; they supported Carter over Ford, if I remember correctly, and look what that got them. They still vote in the D primaries each year, but I suspect they're voting for whoever they think has the best chance of losing the general election.
