Hard to say. Liberals say Roosevelt saved our country. Conservatives say he extended the Depression. (Like Obama extended the Recession). I think he was good on the war front.... but maybe someone else would have been better? Who knows?
I mean, he did get us through WWII (and left us in a solid position when he passed), and for that I'm thankful because the US wouldn't be #1 in the world without all that happened in WWII showing the rest of the world you don't mess with US.
In some ways, it mirrors dropping the atomic bombs - total atrocities, yet completely necessary if Japan were to survive to the current day as a land invasion would have completely wiped out Japan, and left the US so weakened that the USSR could have conquered the world. The other thing nuking Japan and forcing their complete surrender did was save Japan from a fate like Germany.
Looking back on it all, it was the best choice out of a whole bunch of shit ones - and as much as I hate that we had to burn two cities full of civilians to the ground, that was our best option to stop the war with Japan quickly.
