I used to be a correctional officer in California. Some of the inmates sentenced under three strikes and you’re out deserved what they got. Others did not. There was one inmate in particular I remember who did not deserve a life sentence. He was a young mentally ill black man. He would sit quietly in the corner of his cell all day every day. His crime? His first felony was committing a strong arm robbery as a teenager. Then he got out of prison and got caught with two rocks of cocaine (that’s a personal use amount not a drug dealer amount). He was convicted of felony number 2 for crack rock number 1. He was convicted of felony number 3 for crack rock number 2. Three strikes and you’re out. I don’t recall what county he was from but would not be surprised to learn it was San Francisco and Kamala was the DA.
