As someone who has engaged many a Leftist on this very issue: They claim that because they buy things at the store and pay sales tax, that counts as paying taxes. When I explain to them that if they're approving that behavior, then they approve the concept of the Fair Tax, they usually go on a profanity/insult filled tirade. I still get the idea they have no idea what the Fair Tax is. They just think it's bad because people they think they're not supposed to like might support it...even though they just supported it themselves.
I wish our Mexican neighbors well. Hopefully the flood of former-expats coming back will lead to a resistance to corruption and lead to more entrepreneurship there so that they don't have to leave their country.
The best way to keep the U.S. from become a shithole is to help them prevent their country from becoming rescue [large parts of] their country from being one.
(And I have nothing against Mexicans being here. I just want them to do it legally, and if they want to stay, become Americans, not hyphenated Americans)
If we had proper immigration controls this wouldn't be an issue. There wouldn't be enough admitted to affect a given job market. We really could benefit from a small amount of the top talent around the world emigrating here.

I'm pretty sure the ones sneaking across the border are not their brain surgeons and rocket scientists and I would imagine the middle-class-and-up section of Mexican society probably does not vote overwhelmingly leftist; just like in the U.S., you tend to be less inclined to support redistribution of wealth when you actually have earned some for yourself. But that section of society is probably somewhat less represented in our illegal alien population (although there are a number of visa-overstayers as well).
This applies to more than just Mexicans also. I'm sure we have our share or Irish waiters who have overstayed student visas. They should go back also.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the poorest Mexicans and Central Americans who cannot even subsistence farm (or don't want to) would be very supportive of big-government policies. They don't have any other experience and don't understand that they can get things from themselves since in their experience they can't.
