"Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons."
Yep, and that was precisely the point. The slave trade pact goes even further to avoid using the term "slave" and leads to the question of what kind of person could the federal government collect a duty on, but could not stop its importation? Well, there is only one type of person...
But for all the leftist/BLM talking points of our founders being unapologetic slave holders, the evidence points to them not being incredibly proud or even fond of the practice. Though they were not the ones to end slavery, they all knew the practice would die out eventually. Their abuse of the dictionary protected the constitution from being marred by slavery.
If you've made it this far, I have an interesting hypothetical for you. The deep southern states would not have joined the Union if they could not keep their slaves. If either the northern or southern states made good on their threats to form their own union (with hookers.. and blackjack..) and there was no civil war... When do you think slavery would've been abolished?
Not directly, no.

Beautiful!
