I loved it, but am amazed at how much I missed when looking at it in hindsight... the things you dont notice or just brush past when you are busy with vectoring around armies and the other gameplay mechanics. The lore from the research milestones, and secret projects when taken in sequence spell out the story of the game.. the factional rivalries, the alliances and defeats, the moral choices.. It is truly brilliant. There was a website that stepped through the story from pre-planetfall to end-game and it was amazing.. but I cant find the link for it now.
Be warned, I found this and spent many hours so enraptured.. its really compelling! Read it one page to the next with the link at the bottom of each like pages in a book. There are hundreds of comments on some pages going into the science, the philosophy and historical underpinning, politics, the motivations, and so on. Really great stuff.. and has that peculiar quality of being a conversation that's very real and immediate in your head when you first find it.. even though its years old.
My fav factions were Gaia because attacking with worms was cool, University because who doesn't like the big shiny tech bag of toys, and Morgan for easy mode eco. Didnt like Hive much. And neutral on the others.

I usually played as the Spartans because victory through superior firepower, and i liked her voice the best. Morgan was an easy second choice along with the University. i didnt like the hive the UN or the believers.
