Oh cool! This issue is near and dear to me. I work in tech and have been concerned about the wrong people getting into power like Shrilary and throwing open the floodgates for H1B's.

I don't understand how someone in Washington thought H1Bs would be good for America. If you make it easy to outsource labour guess what happens? Companies do it and sell our country out to the lowest bidder.

What makes you think they were acting in America’s best interests?

Deplorable_in_PA 5 points ago +5 / -0

Shrillary took millions from HCL (Indian staffing firm) in exchange for her promising to remove caps on H1B's when she got elected. Gulag and Apple use them instead of US workers and of course contribute hugely to the Dem party. It's a horribly abused program, Trump sees this and is keeping the caps in place.

H-1b, j-1, and F-1 visas are poison and any physician practicing and a shithole country can bag a spot and immigrate here. really pisses me off that I’m waiting for the next application cycle in the fall in order to get a job next June.

Apparently the State Department has found a loophole to nuke this EO with. I'm interested to ask her about that specifically. Loving these AMAs.

cliff notes please

1
krzyzowiec 1 point ago +1 / -0

The state department created a long list of incredibly vague exceptions to the ban, to the point that basically anyone can get in.

Pompeo is the strongest, most pro-MAGA Secretary of State in my lifetime. Extremely credentialed and on board with Trump every step of the way.

Is it Protect US Workers or Protect Us Workers? Either way, good work. H1B program is one of the biggest things harming American workers.

13
PremiumPatriotPepe 13 points ago +13 / -0

Amen to that. H1B needs to be on the agenda when GEOTUS goes scorched earth.

12
kag-2020- 12 points ago +12 / -0

That and publicly funded universities giving away all the STEM seats to foreigners. The "shortage" of tech workers is 100% due to Americans not being able to get in STEM programs.

7
Cheesemaker 7 points ago +7 / -0

There is no "shortage of tech workers". There is a "shortage of tech workers willing to work for slave wages in super-expensive San Fransisco". The H1B visa program is used to hire people below what they would have to pay Americans to do the job. If they paid the American market rate there would be no shortage.

I detest H1B program. I have to advise my kids not to get into certain fields of occupation like software to avoid having their jobs outsourced. The one industry that is somewhat insulated from H1B is the defense industry since only US citizens can work there.

What I find irate is the hiring of H1B by the US government agencies. In the 80’s, almost everybody who worked for a US agency was a US citizen. Nowadays, many US agencies employ H1B workers.

This is awesome! A really serious AMA with someone who is on the front line with one of our many major issues.

I hope she will discuss how the State Dept. just nullified the entire EO by issuing exemptions so broad that every single H1B is now exempted.

That’s amazing that you got her! I’ll do some research

Does anyone know if it’s set-in-stone law, or just a regulation that can be changed, that prevents H1B workers from job hopping? Because if it’s just a regulation, I imagine it would be possible for the administration to make changes to the system without having to go through Congress.

Although I think severely curtailing H1Bs is the way to go, an accompanying solution is to allow the truly gifted ones that are let in to undue their corporate shackles and let them seek better pay by accepting offers from competing companies. It would help out native-born American tech workers; the system now is not a free market. Tech companies that import H1Bs treat them essentially as tied-to-the-job serfs, and artificially depress the entire labor market, driving down wages across the board. I think doing this would disincentivized companies from lying and claiming that there is no native-born talent to fill the jobs, when there actually is.

But send the shitty ones back home first.

What are your plans to stop the EB -> FB spillover coming in October? Have you reached out to USCIS? What are they planning to do about it?

This spillover which is mandated in law will cause 100k+ H1Bs in backlog to get Green Cards. Very bad optics 1 month before the elections for Trump!

Frauds list:

  1. H1B wages are not strict
  2. No limit for i-140
  3. Unlimited H1B extensions. (why can’t they train American instead of opting for extension)
  4. H1B Frauds. There are so many Indians who are earning extra income via hobbies like art, music bands, photography etc.

H1B without i140, Limit of 6-year stay... H1b with i140, No limit of 6-year stay

How software debugging, IT support and testing is considered as high skilled?

1
Fraudimmigrantsusa 1 point ago +1 / -0

though H1B is temporary basis, few policies allow H1B's to stay in US until green card is issued (so, particular position is blocked with immigrants)

There are over 6500 medical graduates looking for jobs instead of getting into medical residencies. This is required to attain a US medical license. Currently, over 7000 non-US citizens are applying and over 4000 spots are taken by foreigners. US citizens medical graduates like myself have no way to pay back over 400,000 in fed loans without a license. Our taxes are spent (150,000 spent in medicare per spot annually) on non-citizens while citizens have no future and are can have their wages/SS Benefits taken as a result. Please create legislation that prohibits Non-citizens from taking residency spots before all US-Citizens are in residencies. https://nypost.com/2020/08/05/lets-stop-importing-doctors-while-american-mds-go-jobless/
