They've been doing this since the Minneapolis riots in June. Stops the cars from being effectively used as weapons or obstructions against the police.

When the Minneapolis riots were happening and the national guard were called in, entire parking lots of protester cars had their tires slashed.

Yeah, I remember seeing a lot of REEEing online about "why would the police slash the tires of everyone's cars?!?! We were just PEACEFULLY PROTESTING"

And I remember back then being sort of sympathetic, but when you think about it, it makes sense. A car is one of the most dangerous potential weapons to use against a co-ordinated police response. So better safe than sorry.
