I was over there in early 1990s for business. Even then, the locals had come to the realization that the Turks they imported were a festering problem that was only going to get worse.

In a way, I feel sorry for the German people. They were collectively cucked by their government post WWII. I can understand the reasoning, and the complicity of the rest of the world in it, given the situation at the time after two world wars and having the commies next door, but it's still heartbreaking to see. Combine that with their cultural conditioning to "just follow orders" (IMHO) and it's been a recipe for disaster.
But OTOH, they have a representative republic, so the citizens are responsible for their government. Of course, the same could be said for us.

I've been feeling that way too. Germany seems to be circumventing the Treaty of the Final Settlement restrictions on their military by building up through the EU (or at least trying too). I've been feeling that way too. Germany seems to be circumventing the Treaty of the Final Settlement restrictions on their military by building up through the EU (or at least trying too). Couple that with their industrial investments into China and natural gas partnership with Russia it's hard to think of them much as an ally at the moment. Also the recent development with the Iran arms embargo clears up the picture a bit more.
I've been thinking a lot about how things would shake out if China makes a move for Taiwan and I don't have much faith in Germany as it stands. I think the strongest allies we have at the moment are those within the Five Eyes network and Japan. I think Japan should be included into Five Eyes at this point to be honest. Australia's economic ties to China are worrisome as well.

The difference in my lifetime is staggering. 30-40 years ago it was a proud continent with small, highly militarized nations that somehow managed to keep up with the two super powers in some areas.
Now the same nations are afraid of their own flags and only treat the token military spending as virtue signaling.

I get your point but look at it like this: WW1 and 2 are mainly on a different scale because of human expansion and the number of countries involved. In terms of relative numbers vs absolute they were far from the worst even in modern history.

Then you also have the number of men that had kids before being killed in battle, and the fact that you see the same pattern in the countries that suffered very few casualties during these wars.
