Being emotional isn't the same as being empathetic. They're highly emotional in their interpretations and responses and low in empathy. Even among their in-groups, I'd argue their responses are more conditioned by peer pressure and expectations than actual empathy.
I agree, but people aren't so good at drawing a distinction between the two. I see plenty of conservatives say that Lefties are just misguided, but their "heart's in the right place". It's the kind of mindset that makes us pull our punches, when we should be merciless.

I heard that saying years ago. I don't think most if any conservatives think that anymore. Lines have been drawn and sides chosen.
