Those stores lease space for $750+ 'per square foot' per year.... some of the highest rents in the world.

158
OhLollyLollyPop 158 points ago +159 / -1

A lot of those companies won't reopen there. No tourists. Rich people moved out. No point in paying exorbitant rents to just lose money. Plus, flu season starts again in less than 3-1/2 months. You can't stay shut down and make money. A lot of workers will be working from home until next year.

Should be a law that prohibits you from voting for a minimum of 5 years, when you flee Democrat Strongholds.

49
TheThreeSeashells 49 points ago +49 / -0

Not long enough. That's only one Presidential and Gubernatorial election cycle and makes it possible for them not to miss a Senatorial election, depending where they move of course. The actual solution is state-level electoral colleges. That will prevent them from moving to non-Commie locations in the first place.

36
Ottovonbismarck 36 points ago +36 / -0

This. I think state-level electoral colleges would've prevented so much of the wrong of the last thirty years. Could've really put Portland and Seattle in check in some ways, for example.

8
Block_Helen 8 points ago +8 / -0

Repeal the 17th amendment.

2
TheThreeSeashells 2 points ago +2 / -0

...and replace it with election by statewide electoral college. You still end up with shitty politicians in local red districts who "go along to get along." I don't think I'm trusting them to pick senators. Plus, letting the state legislatures pick senators means you still end up with two Democrat senators in NY for example. Also, senators can continue to ignore everything north of NYC. Statewide electoral colleges fix that problem and very likely prevent it from becoming a guaranteed two Dem state. Clinton would never have been elected to the Senate in NY with a statewide electoral college.

2
Block_Helen 2 points ago +2 / -0

I like that idea a lot.

2
TruthyBrat 2 points ago +2 / -0

Repeal the 19th while you’re at it.

2
Block_Helen 2 points ago +2 / -0

That would be great.

0
VyseLegendaire 0 points ago +5 / -5

That's too far-fetched to work. The electoral college system is not so suitable for state or smaller level elections since its really meant to normalize large geographic areas rather than race groups.

Whats practical is repealing the:

  • Federal Reserve Act
  • 16th amendment
  • 17th amendment
  • 19th amendment

the 17th amendment allow direct popular voting of senators rather than elected by state senates who are in turn elected by the local districts, which approximates the electoral college ideal, as was the case prior.

The others are all problems too but try to explain to people that women make bad voters is difficult.

3
splink 3 points ago +5 / -2

I agree with the rest of your post, but not that last bit. Being born with the magic flesh-noodle does not do anything toward whether you are an informed voter or not. Many of the most well-educated and determined conservative voters I've known have been women.

2
meals23 2 points ago +3 / -1

Being born with a penis doesn't make you an informed voter. Being born with testicles does, because they create the hormone testosterone which is used by both men and women to think logically.

1
VyseLegendaire 1 point ago +2 / -1

Its a pretty complicated topic about culture, race, history etc. I won't say its clear cut but maybe voting rotes should be granted based on a wealth/responsibility test which is irrespective of sex. The main problem being women often with no stake in the policies they vote in being granted extraordinary benefits from those same acts. Now of course many groups act similarly female or not, due to the feminization of society largely through mass-migration since the 1960s.

2
meals23 2 points ago +2 / -0

The others are all problems too but try to explain to people that women make bad voters is difficult.

interesting thing to think about, the 1960 election is one of the closest in American history and more men voted for Nixon, but Kennedy won because he had a very large share of votes from women who voted for him because he was handsome

Makes you wonder how different things might have been.

4
VyseLegendaire 4 points ago +4 / -0

Its not just that women often make bad voters but that there are also more of them.

3
meals23 3 points ago +3 / -0

especially back then 15 years after the end of ww2 and less than 10 years after Korea you had a lot of young men who would have been voters never came home

1
TheThreeSeashells 1 point ago +1 / -0

So, you think it's more practical to get two thirds of the house and senate to repeal three Constitutional amendments? Particularly when one of those amendments directly affects the chances of one of those entities getting re-elected? However, individual states creating a electoral college system for state-wide elections is not plausible?

Ironically, your idea only becomes realistic once state-level electoral colleges are set up. Then you can call a Constitutional Convention and maybe actually have 2/3rd of the states to back it up.

1
VyseLegendaire 1 point ago +1 / -0

its not practical no, but at least its possible. I don't know how you go about creating instituting state level Electoral Colleges. What I mean is mostly the 17th amendment but I threw the rest in there for good measure, because really how do you solve an electoral issue without a free, suitable and non-coerced electorate.

1
TheThreeSeashells 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don't know how you go about creating instituting state level Electoral Colleges.

State legislatures can do it. States with (actual) Republicans in control of the house and senate and governor's seat could pull it off. I was hoping Kentucky would have done it under Bevin since they held a veto-proof majority. If he had taken action, he'd still be Governor. I imagine a state like Alabama or Oklahoma could pull it off pretty easily.

They're trying it in Texas apparently: https://www.honestaustin.com/2020/07/23/texas-gop-platform-state-electoral-college-proposal/

2
meals23 2 points ago +2 / -0

It'd be nice but let's be real California will produced 18 billion votes for Biden so even though Trump will win 49 states they'll still bitch

10
Block_Helen 10 points ago +10 / -0

Unless you mean they're going to somehow invalidate or steal your vote, your vote for president and Senate is worth just as much in Philly as it is in any other part of PA. The presidential election is really 50 state popular vote elections.

Trump really, really needs to win PA so your vote in a battleground state - no matter where it is cast - is actually much more important than the vote of someone in a solid red state.

2
LLchurch 2 points ago +4 / -2

Ok I'm really new to politics and still trying to learn but there is a 0 percent chance in a fair election that the county of Philadelphia will ever go red. I thought it only mattered if it could flip the county because I thought PA somehow was Dem most of the time despite Philly being the only blue county in the state. I know it is a swing state a lot of the time but I know pretty much nothing about politics and the whole process of how the vote and electoral college works.

The joggers and super liberal hipster soyboy commies ruining my city will all be voting against trump. Not for Biden just against trump. I've seen 1 Biden flag in the city. Been seeing more Trump flags popping up though and I don't live in the really nice part on the edge of the city.

Don't matter still voting Trump regardless don't want anyone to think I'm not gonna go vote just because Philly is super corrupt and my dead relatives all became Dems they day after they died magically

7
Block_Helen 7 points ago +7 / -0

No, it's not by county or district unless you are actually voting at that level - for example, your county sheriff or state or US representative.

For President, whichever candidate gets the most votes in your state, wins that state and its electoral votes. So it doesn't matter where you live in PA, your vote for Trump has the same value as anyone else's in the state.

The Senate is also a popular vote statewide election.

Philly does have outsize influence over PA but only because it has so many people voting Dem.

Every vote matters but since you're in a swing state, yours matters more!

3
LLchurch 3 points ago +3 / -0

Thanks makes sense. I thought the big problem with all of this was the Dem shit holes (major cities) just voting blue and fucking over the rest of the state like CA where it's a lot of red with LA and SF going blue making CA go blue same for PA because Philly is by far the most populated like 1.2 mil the next closes I think is Pittsburgh with like 500k ish. PA has some beautiful and amazing small towns but that is all there really is outside of Philly Pittsburgh and Harrisburg small towns and rural nothingness.

Same thing is happening all over the country. Restaurants and the industry are devastated. Bars and clubs, gone. Will never return.

Same for live music, theater, dance clubs, etc. These places will never return. We are going to have an entire generation lost in many industries, because of this. I know people who worked in the entertainment industry who are now resigned to never working in that industry again, all of their sacrifice and hard work, all for nothing. Now they don't have a clue what to do.

The nuke that was dropped on our culture is devastating.

Honestly I didn’t take any video. There was no point. It all looks back to “normal” except for the shitty BLM mural that’s all across 55-56th street splashed w red & white paint.

Even Washington square park arc w two statues that were covered in red paint has been sandblasted. You can still see “acab” faintly in black spray paint on the base but I think NYC knows how shitty it would look if they kept it as it was in June.

I don’t live in NYC but go often for my business.

Having leased in NYC, the square footage includes to the outside of the exterior walls of the building and the common areas (divided with other tenants if there are any). The leases are also usually triple net as well. In other words, it's insanely expensive.

17
Bullet3250 17 points ago +17 / -0

I lease commercial space - my retail goes at $15/sf gross + utilities.

From what I know - those Manhattan high end retail spaces have much more to do with pushing 'stock prices' - than actually turning a profit.

2,500sf at ~$800/sf = $2 million in rent per year. Pretty big nut to crack.

15
cuckslasher 15 points ago +15 / -0

outside of the exterior walls of the building

16
FireannDireach 16 points ago +16 / -0

NYC real estate is a bizarre world. I learned all about it living near there, and attempting multiple times to try and get a foothold by renting. (Boy, was I dumb)

There's a youtuber name Lois Rossmann, who does Macbook repair in NYC. He was forced out of a hole in the wall in lower Manhattan because his company has gotten so successful, he needed more space. He documented his adventures trying to find a new space, and dealing with NYC realtors and NYC prices. It's insanity. The prices are bad enough, but the lying, corruption, and sleaze is just shocking how blatant it is.

Last month, he was attempting to look for a house to buy, in the region. Another eye opening series of videos, looking at the crapshacks he could afford, near the city.

6

We have Greek relatives who don't have AC, and don't use car AC. In 100deg+ heat they all have no major heat-related problems, even the old grandmothers who are 85 and 92.

7
FireannDireach 7 points ago +7 / -0

It's the humidity. I've lived on both coasts. It's 100+ right now on the west coast - but very low humidity. It's bearable if you're not in the direct sun, and I usually don't turn my A/C on until it's 95+ - and only lower the temp to 80. And then don't need it at night, because it cools off, or at worst I just leave a fan running.

New York in August is FUCKING MISERABLE without A/C. I grew up in that, and lived it as an adult. You can't breathe! And sleeping in 90+ heat and high humidity? It's awful. We had one window unit A/C as a kid, in my parents bedroom. (Of course, lol) Many nights in august us kids were camped on their beds or on the floor because we could not sleep in our rooms, it was too stifling.

I can live without central air in NY most of the year, but come August, screw you, I'm turning the damn A/C on.

Vote in the red area where your vote will count. Florida needs your vote!!! This is what our state's election page states: "Eligible individuals can register to vote at any time. The deadline to register in order to participate in an upcoming election is 29 days before the election. The registration deadline for 2020 General Election: October 5." Look up what you have to do - I assume first thing needed would be to get a driver's license in the state of FL? Look into making an appointment with the DMV SOON as they may be backed up from Covid? Link to how to register in Florida Edit: I wouldn't do anything by mail. The mail here has been crazy - things getting delayed, lost, etc. Whatever you do, don't trust the mail with sending in your voter registration application.

If you go to a DMV in the middle of Broward, et. al., there's going to be a lot more delays, mask requirements, etc. which will mess up your registration attempt.

Vote in accordance with the law. Check the laws before you go. If you want to vote in Florida, then be sure to establish residency per the law in time to do that.

All the decent conservative people run away, leaving all the cities, all that history, all that WORK that was done by us to build them, to the scumbags that don't deserve it. I agree! I know you would probably like to sway NY, but your vote may not count as much there if it stays blue. Historically, Florida is a swing state that definitely decides elections. We have had so many people move into our state in the last 15-20 years that vote blue, we are in desperate need of help. We used to be red, but probably more like purple now. You have to follow your conscience, of course, but we could certainly use your vote here to help offset the New Yorkers who are moving down and will vote dem!

Only 36% of Floridians were actually born here, so we're definitely heavily affected by transplants political opinions, which I say as a transplant myself. We can use all of the Republican support we can get for sure.

Lol i have ..... They all think they are nascar drivers, in their POS sedans that have parts falling off, cutting people off while trying to keep up with the $150k Mercedes amg doing the same thing.

1
Indivisual_1 1 point ago +1 / -0

Lol for real. I have lived in DC and LA before ATL. Everyone talks about how their locals are shitty drivers, but honestly ATL is next level insanity.

Thankfully, I’m now far enough outside the perimeter to not see them as much..

I remember when that road was built. There used to be real restaurants at the service areas with oval counters, swivel stools, and waitresses. Real treat for me as a kid. And then they closed them.

NYC doesn't really have that many residents - losing residents won't be as impactful as losing the jobs that the boarded up businesses represent. Big parts of NYC turns into a ghost town at night, because everyone commutes in.

But white flight is happening all over the country. People are bailing on any big city right now. They made the mess, now they expect everyone else to clean it up. Diversity is making our cities shitholes. Again. Go look at a movie shot in NYC or SF in the 70's - the were grim, ugly, delapidated messes from years of Dem "leadership". We saw a renaissance of these cities in the 80's, with the new wealth from Reagan's polices, and where you could once rent practically an entire building for what people pay now for a studio apartment.

I grew up on the east coast. I remember driving through NYC, on a family trip, seeing carcass after carcass of abandoned cars along the freeway into the city, literal drifts of trash and litter. The city, under corrupt dems like Koch, just stopped directing his city workers to stop towing the stripped cars. Go watch Serpico, it's a true story of what NYC was like in the 70's - corrupt, falling apart, and a hellhole.

It's going back to that.

DebbieinDallas 5 points ago +5 / -0

I left Upstate when I turned 18. It was called Land of Taxes even back then 50 yrs ago. Dems have ruined the state. All the Upstate taxes goes to supporting NYC.

NYC here. This is not NYC now, this was from early June during the riots.

44
CanadianTrump 44 points ago +46 / -2

That is the point. Peqceful protesters don’t require boarded windows.

24
Peacebears 24 points ago +24 / -0

Thank you for some insight. Were the boards there to prevent looting or placed there after windows were broken?

9
IceCream 9 points ago +9 / -0

Both. Some already got looted the nights before, some were boarding up to prevent what seemed like inevitable looting.

16
JoePCool14 16 points ago +16 / -0

Thanks for clarifying. I figured that this was older footage, since NYC hasn't really seen major riot destruction for the past few weeks as far as I know.

Now in Chicago on the other hand...

7
DNC_Ballot_QATeam 7 points ago +7 / -0

Boards and graffiti are still in NYC. Gucci is not essential business. Many of the shops on Canal street are boarded up but not all. It's not 100% by any means.

8
Danmax67 8 points ago +8 / -0

I drove down Canal Street last Sunday. Everything was boarded up and/or covered in graffiti.

4
BigCovfefe 4 points ago +4 / -0

So what does 5th ave look like now? Are those stores open? Are people shopping, wearing masks? I haven't really checked the status of NYC lately.

1
americanmovie 1 point ago +1 / -0

Most stores are open. People are shopping; although not as busy as before of course, but I've been in many clothing stores, non-food stores; people are out. Most people in Manhattan when outside are wearing masks. I'd say more than 3/4 in my experience, which is mostly Union Square area/East/West Village/Lincoln Center area/Central Park. Myself, I don't wear it when outside unless going from place to place in a short distance. Also never had anyone say anything to me about not wearing one. Inside of course is a different story; I wear it.

I was originally going to take my wife to NYC this summer as it would have been her first trip. We had everything booked. Then came the Gook Flu which ruined that. We then decided that we would go for Christmas so that I could show her Central Park, midtown, the lights, the stores. Then a bunch of subhumans started rioting. Crime. Defunding of police.

Fuck, I miss my home.

Oh I grew up in NYC. Lived there for over 20 years.

No way in hell I’d go for a swim in the Hudson.

Been to London, it is indeed a shithole. Only saving grace when I was in Paris was that their McDonalds had chicken wings. Place smelled disgusting.

Only place in NY I enjoyed getting away to was a tiny ranch my folks and I spent our holidays at growing up as well as Lake Placid/Mirror Lake.

I didnt have plans for New York specifically, but I used to live in Chicago and loved it. I dont get the anti-city sentiment that seems to permeate this site sometimes. But maybe its time to gain an appreciation for rural areas. Weve vacationed in cities recently but now Im thinking we should do more stuff like national parks, camping, etc.

5

The big cities are like the state of CA. Like the state itself, once beautiful with interesting places to go and things to enjoy. Then it was all ruined by radical leftists. We just hate what horrible, entitled people have done to them.

I went to NYC in a college trip for the weekend. Frankly, I couldnt see the attraction.

2
mathman 2 points ago +2 / -0

In the wrong area, NYC can be a living hell. And certain parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan have been colonized by hipsters or foreigners, and kept nearly unlivable by them just to maintain control.

That said, a lot of rich people really enjoy Manhattan for a change of pace. Broadway shows, fancy restaurants, high end retail, Central Park, elegant hotels...there was a lot of great cultural infrastructure built up over the years. And if the rich people disappear, that will also disappear over time.

I've also known some artsy people who really love the museums in NYC, or maybe the opera. I still want to go there for the museums.

Stores are GONE!!! Been there for 30, 40, 50 years GONE!!!!

Homeless and drug addicts are ruling the streets. Violence is sky rocketing.

A certain element is now in Manhattan and I honestly dont feel safe. Ive noticed a LARGE uptick in young black hood folks shopping at saks, etc. Something seems fishy.

But nothing to see here folks, orange man bad.

6

Isn’t New York famous for its absurd amount of traffic? Those streets look small town empty

6
Meme_Too 6 points ago +6 / -0

In five years NY is going to look like Los Angeles in Blade Runner. The high rises will house the millions of immigrants who have flooded in. Drones will fly around barking orders to try and control the crime, which has multiplied by 10,000 percent.

OR, Giuliani gets reelected and cleans it up in two years, so that in five years, it's better than ever.

Your choice, New York.

6

7

It is dire, but this video is one I saw a couple of weeks after the looting. It's not quite that bad now, but it's still not good. Watch Jason Goodman walkarounds on YT and you will see how it is now. (Also a guy called Action Kid.) They go out almost daily on foot to different parts of Manhatran.

4

None of this is necessary in a polite and civil republic.

Msm, if they ever talk about it: “uhh, the boards are up to protect from covid. That’s what really destroyed the city.”

4
PropagandaWizard1984 4 points ago +4 / -0

When Covid first got big in spring all the high end stores in large cities put up boards like a war was coming. They knew back then what would happen. It was all a planned pandemic to cover for the economic collapse. Everyone who studied the economy knew it would collapse we just didn't know how they would try to cover it up. Now we know.
