An AR (and learning to use it) is the best investment that anyone can make.
I'm sorry to say, but however fun and lovely they are, pistols, shotguns and hunting rifles will not cut mustard when the time comes (and are virtually useless tactically, except shotguns in rare circumstances). There is going to be a huge divide between the guys who got serious, and those who did not.
Fortunately, we have about 5-10 years before everything goes to shit. But it's coming and is at this point, imo, irreversible.
I bought a Remington 700 308 because I already had an AR-10 and I didn’t want to be buying several different cartridges. 308 is a workhorse, but it’s not the best cartridge out there. The round will break down at 1,000 yards.
If I had it to do over I would go with a long action. Maybe in the coming years.
Slightly less kick than a 30-06 (10%). Very slightly less velocity (5%). Shorter case allows for smaller throw on the bolt for faster followup shots. 308 is available on modern semi-auto rifles, 30-06 not so much. 308 is basically better in every single way than 30-30 unless you really want the lever action.
Both 30-06 and 308 are good out to about 600 yards, but if you want to reach out and touch someone further away, I'd recommend something more boutique such as 6.5 creedmoor (308 with better ballistic coefficient bullets) but you can still find modern guns such as a CMMG or PSA AR10
3/4; honestly, I don’t remember. I remember once hitting all ten at 500 one of the days leading up to qual day, but not actually when it counted. But I’d have to guess I averaged seven or so at 500.
I would disagree with the shotgun assessment in a tight quarters type area like an apartment. Plus, at least for now, it's the only thing I have experience with.
I'm sticking with what I know how to use for now. But trust me an ar is in the future plans.
The Colt revolver didn't win the west. The shotgun won the west. You don't have to be pin-point accurate. And most shootouts were at close enough range for them to be effective.
I love AR's though, but for right now I at least have some experience with a shotgun, and a gun you have experience with is better than something brand new.
Slugs are also a thing to increase a little distance, but the scenario that worries me most is "peaceful protests" entering my living area.
If you're barricaded in your apartment, then a shotgun is fine. But as far as making a difference or joining up with others, you'll be largely useless in any group setting.
That said, I can't think highly enough of those who go from nothing at all to buying a pistol or shotgun. At least you won't be meat for the grinder.
But ideally, a patriot like yourself should prepare themselves for the day when they might need to (as awful as it sounds) be incorporated into an ad hoc militia if necessary for communal defense. Pistols and shotguns are useless in such a setting.
You can find an inexpensive AR for less than half the cost of a new smartphone.

I'm aware. I unfortunately live in Commiefornia, things are difficult here. I may also have some legal issues preventing me from owning a gun right now, I'm not 100% sure, but I really do need to go speak with a lawyer soon before the shortage takes literally ALL ammo.
But hey, I do appreciate the positive words, thank you.
I understand. But just keep in mind that whatever obstacles you are up against now, will only get worse as time goes on. It's already harder to buy an AR in California in 2020, than it was in 2015.
Still. It's absolutely the case that government has spent an inordinate amount of effort on making such a basic right a bureaucratic nightmare to overcome, and I fully empathize.
Idk about that. I have several hunting rifles and I'm not one to go stand right in front of gunfire. I'll be posted up in an eagles nest making every round count.
You don't even know what serious shit is yet. Just wait and see. This is just the beginning, and it will accelerate when Trump wins re-elections, as more leftist elements give way to despair and terrorism.
There's going to be a few years where the police and national guard are still expected to take care of it. If Trumps wins re-election, he'll force the federal and military agencies to play a bigger role. If Biden wins (ugh), there'll be a brief wave of triumphalism from the left.
In either case, what follows next will require several years to play out (either leftists resorting more and more to terrorism and hysteria, or carrying out a hysterical purge to try and cement their advantage forever, ram through gun legislation, etc).
The climax of that will represent the real tipping point towards militias.
The only thing that could avert or delay this significantly, is a war with China. Which actually, would be the best thing that could happen to America. (they don't have enough nukes to ensure MAD, so likely wouldn't go nuclear).

Disagree with you on the bolt action. I was a Marine Corps rifle expert and I’m pretty sure I could do some serious damage from 800 yards away. 😉
But yeah, I’ve got a 308 autoloader also.
An unarmed marine (what a horrible idea) is better than a civilian with an AR-15. God bless you. But those who have nothing have to start somewhere.
I never served, but I'm a hunter and can in fact do damage at 800 yards with a 30-06.
I've never shot a 308. How does it compare to the 30-30 or 30-06?
Recoil wise my 30-06 has quite a bit more recoil, I added a brake to tame it down.
Long action, now you are talking, 300 WM will knock down any game animal in N America (I have a brake on that too), IMO this NEEDS a brake.
I’ve never shot those other two. 😂😂

Thanks. Exactly what I was trying to figure out.
Boutique? I've been thinking about .280 AI for a year. I should just pull the trigger.
Negligible ballistics difference, < 200 fps.
how many expert badges did you get? and what was your score at the 500yd line?

Exactly. We have to be ready for those so called peaceful protests

Currently I'm accurate up to 800 yards.

Maybe he means until it comes to the rural areas
