I never served, but I'm a hunter and can in fact do damage at 800 yards with a 30-06.

I've never shot a 308. How does it compare to the 30-30 or 30-06?

Recoil wise my 30-06 has quite a bit more recoil, I added a brake to tame it down.

Long action, now you are talking, 300 WM will knock down any game animal in N America (I have a brake on that too), IMO this NEEDS a brake.

I’ve never shot those other two. 😂😂

I bought a Remington 700 308 because I already had an AR-10 and I didn’t want to be buying several different cartridges. 308 is a workhorse, but it’s not the best cartridge out there. The round will break down at 1,000 yards.

If I had it to do over I would go with a long action. Maybe in the coming years.

Slightly less kick than a 30-06 (10%). Very slightly less velocity (5%). Shorter case allows for smaller throw on the bolt for faster followup shots. 308 is available on modern semi-auto rifles, 30-06 not so much. 308 is basically better in every single way than 30-30 unless you really want the lever action.

Both 30-06 and 308 are good out to about 600 yards, but if you want to reach out and touch someone further away, I'd recommend something more boutique such as 6.5 creedmoor (308 with better ballistic coefficient bullets) but you can still find modern guns such as a CMMG or PSA AR10

Thanks. Exactly what I was trying to figure out.

Boutique? I've been thinking about .280 AI for a year. I should just pull the trigger.

Negligible ballistics difference, < 200 fps.
