These grovel/statements have been going on since Charles Stuart's 1989 murder of his pregnant wife at the latest, and media blackouts have been around for even longer, as those of us old enough to remember San Francisco's "zebra murders" can attest.

The Constitution may not prohibit execution, but the 8th Amendment of the Bill of Rights does explicitly ban 'Cruel and Unusual Punishment'.
