I get the distinct impression that the dude just wanted to be free. Leave the Brock Johnson characters for the more typical actors....and look at the crazy panoply that results.
He was brilliant in "Videodrome"...."The TV is the Retina of the Minds Eye"...that one deserves a re-watch.

This: I love "little movies" and James is King there.
So many that I would have to name for you to know, but that I would watch again happily. (think 80s)
Try "Cop" from 1988....not sure how many people have that on their radar.
In fact, this can get tough....James put himself into situations that are not easy to digest....low/hard characters ("the Boost").
