But there is an embarrassing amount of truth to it in general. There might be kernels of truth in every news story and if you’re savvy you can filter out some of the propaganda,

Sadly filtering doesn't add back in omitted material and doesn't correct fake data.

but you can find Truth if you look for it on the internet

So, not on TV news. Which is exactly what the post says.

One big difference between China and most of the rest of the Western world is that in China, even if one has been provided with correct information, there's nothing the average Joe can do to effect change. In most of the rest of the Western World, that's not true. Having correct info can be acted upon by average people and our systems of government can be made to comply with our demands...if we demand it vigorously enough.

Of course, that brings us to our current problem of false propaganda being couched as truthful information and that's the real problem in journalism and schools.

Ten years ago, mcintyrejamie's Chinese friend would have been wrong.

Sure, there was bias here and there, but you could still get ACTUAL NEWS from the news. CNN was the first to go bad; they were known as the "communist news network" for several years.

Then Trump won the Republican nomination--and that SAME DAY, I watched every major news network in America (except Fox News) completely lose their shit and go all-in for Hillary Clinton. They literally turned into propaganda for the Democrats.

Fortunately--and the United States is VERY different from China in this respect--there's lots of independent news sources we can go to. People who broadcast the news without bias--and without fear of getting arrested and shot.

This is not true... It's a nice sentiment and has a nice punch but its not true for most Chinese nationals. Also, they have like 13 channels, and one of those channels is essentially "news propaganda" the remaining are channels like a science channel, or other major aspects of society. It's all propaganda obviously (or atleast presumably).

Seems to me "The news" is a pretty vague idea to evaluate the truth of.

I doubt it, but my conduit to china has painted an image that disagrees strongly with this.
