After reading Frederick Douglas's experiences living there, I'm more inclined to believe it's always been a rough place, as many port cities tend to be all over the world.
I think there's truth in saying progressive policies are far from producing actual progress though. The progress of civilization is based on seizing new opportunies, discovering new things, competetion for resources, and back breaking work. The Left thinks they're trying to help those left behind during this process but they're really just incentivizing people to choose to stay behind.
I agree. No one needs to convince me that cities aren't the optimal places to live. That's why my wife and I moved to a rural area in 1980. And here is where we'll stay.
Our political parties are so corrupt, I doubt they are seriously trying to help anybody. More likely, they are trying to keep people dumb and unmotivated except come election time, when they get their free phone and a cookout. Politicians are scum.
