I mean social security is kind of stupid. Could pay into your whole life but if you die before getting any return your family sees 0 of it. I'd be for getting rid of it.
It could be made into an individual account, like an IRA. You could get returns on it and it would illustrate what a grift the whole thing is.
Or... you could just get an actual IRA instead of an inefficient 'government program'.
You shouldn't cater to the lazy and stupid but push people to better themselves and plan for the future.

It wasn't really this. The idea of social security, at its' foundation, is that most people would never see it. Most people would be dead before eligible. In the first year, 1937, only 53,236 people classified as beneficiaries. The total payout was $1,278,000. Within just 13 years, 1950, over 3 million people were on social security with a payout of nearly a billion dollars. The entire idea was never meant to be "retirement," but that is what it became. Nobody should ever rely on the government, let alone rely on the government for retirement. For Social Security to work as intended, the eligibility age should be much higher.
Average life expectancy of a male was 55 years old back then. Total scam to begin with.
So... how did we get hoodwinked out of our money? It should be up to each generation if they want to be throwing piles of cash into a money pit. The government shouldn't be able to create social programs that will stretch nearly 100 years and not adjust to current realities (as you said, too many people drawing from it, not to mention misappropriation of funds).
As with any socialist policy, it creates a large group of people who become solely reliant on the government. There are so many people that need social security today, that it would take a real effort to fix it, and politicians aren't about trying to do actual work. It has become a completely pyramid scheme, where current tax payers have to pay in, or the entire pyramid crumbles. Additionally, we have generations of individuals that have "paid in" to the social security scam, and very few people are okay with just never seeing that money again.
SSA passed in 1935, and the first checks were issued in 1940. Imagine if you started drawing on an investment account with only 5 years 'growth'.

My mother died at 63 while I was in college, had maxed out her as as well as my dad, our options were either take 0 of her ss or 75% for 2 years until my dad's would kick in at 100%. She worked her whole life at times making more than my dad to have it all ponzi'd away.

That seath benefit amount has not changed throughout the years, but spouse can recieve income for children 16 and under and kids 18 and under receive income.

Just let me invest my own money tax free. Have a safety net for those who are mentally or physically unfit to do that. Let me pass it down to my kids tax free. Same with health care. Within 1 generation the problem would be solved forever.

I’d say everyone above 55 now is grandfathered. Everyone who has worked and is below 55 should get everything they paid back (gradually). As that goes into effect, paychecks stop mandatory ssi deducting and perhaps those dumb enough to trust the govt can have an optional program that must compete against private sector.

I advocate on cutting Social Security right now, would take a 40 year phase out but I’m ready to vote on it now. If I would have invested that 14% of my paycheck for the last 38 years I’d have millions of dollars that wouldn’t be in government control.
