I remember a massive ad campaign when it was debuting and that's how they portrayed it. So, it's likely even worse than that. Of course it seems the white guy is the butt of all the jokes.

I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing. If the convention was being aired on three channels, and each channel had around 2m viewers, that would put total viewership at 6m-ish. That's significantly more than other shows.
