When I was in college, there was this group called Women in Computing or something like that. There was a massive event on campus where they had speakers from all of the big tech companies drop by, including certain skunkworks such as Google’s Project X or whatever it is called now. The only people allowed to attend were women. Now, we had some brilliant chicks in my program, almost all went on to do great things in tech - but none of them considered themselves “female programmers” - rather they were software engineers who just happened to pee sitting down.
But there was obvious bias. The really good opportunities for scholarships, volunteer work, internships, jobs straight out of university? Yeah all of those were directed towards women. Specialty meetings with recruiters from FAANG - women only. There was literally a professor who put her girls all up front and always graded them more leniently. If you were a dude, you better outshine everyone and not have any autistic tendencies, and even then you’d be lucky to get an internship that wasn’t bitch work for a failing local company.
It’s sad the reality of this.
